Default Another EZ Loader brake question...

I have a single axle EZ Loader with drum surge brakes. The trailer is about 6 years old and I haven't had any problems with the brakes until yesterday. Somehow the cable that engages the brakes if the trailer comes off the ball got yanked between when I launched the boat and went put it back on the trailer. I couldn't figure out how to disengage the brakes so I cut a hose to release the pressure.

The boat weighs about 1800 pounds and I bought the trailer with brakes because I was pulling it with a Ranger. I have upgraded to a 1/2 ton and am really questioning whether I want to keep brakes on the trailer (as most of you know they can be a real pain).

If I were to not fix the brakes is there anything I need to worry about other than plugging the brake lines and changing the coupler?

Appreciate the help...and BTW, how do you disengage the brakes after the emergency cable has been pulled? Its an Atwood surge actuator with the cable coming out of the top. I read thru the manual and did a Google search, but nada.

Thanks.

To disengage the emergency brake, lift the metal tab over the cable and push the cable back into the coupler.

Well apparently that's the way they are supposed to work. Unfortunately, mine didn't. I shoved the cable back in the clip and it didn't change a thing. I finally put rocks behind the trailer tires and backed the truck up to put pressure on the brake system. That did release the brakes and I thought all was well. They locked back up about 10 miles down the road while I was doing about 30 mph.
