Re: traeger bbq
I know a few people that have them and love them. I looked at them before I bought A brinkman. The only reason I didn't go with the Traeger was Cost. Other than that I hear they are excellent.

Re: traeger bbq
I only live about 4 miles from Mt.Angel, where the Traeger BBQ's are built. I have a couple of friends out here who work for them and, of course, own their BBQ's. From what I can tell, the are really well built, versatile BBQ"s. They use them for slow smoking as well as grilling. You have your choice of which flavor wood pellets you want to use.

Re: traeger bbq
My Dad bought one about 2 years ago. He uses it a lot and really likes it.
It works great for chicken, ribs, brisket, etc..
I still prefer a "regular" bbq for burgers, but everything else I've tried was better on the Traeger.

The smokeman at homedepot are the same as Traeger's. Or are they actually made by Traeger?

Re: traeger bbq
Sled19,
The Smokeman's are Tragers. If you look at the manual, you'll see it's Traeger's manual.
Helped the neighbor picks theirs up just last week.
It's one of those private label things.

Thanks for the answer. May even be a little cheaper than one with the Traeger name on the front of it. Does there seem to be a big Quality difference in the smokeman from the depot, and the one with the Traeger name on the front?

Re: traeger bbq
we bought the ltl tex about a year ago. it is a fine smoker and cooker. a tri tip or chicken is about the best around. does real good on salmon and halbut.
after a neighbor about got launched by his 5 gal propane tank, no more gas grills for us.
the only draw back to the treger so far is the high cost of the pellets, i hope to soon find a source of hardwood pellets that a cheaper than $39 for 40lbs, which is what i paid in florence.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">The neighbor is a nut on the Traegers and money is no object (he's tossing a $1,500 gas Webber for a $500 Traeger/Smokeman) and got the Smokeman.
I think he called Traeger about it.

Re: traeger bbq
Most people who have Traegers are absolutely nuts about them. It has turned out to be a hobby rather than another BBQ. We had a banquet at the Mt Angel Brewing Co in Feb for a large group. All food is prepared on Traeger equipment. There was a unanimous vote to return due to the food (Salmon and Prime Rib). These units are made for the true BBQ, not only the 10 minute grilling exercise most people are use to. They have a couple of speeds for adaptability.

Neighbor has a Traeger and swears by it. They just bought a 2nd one (Smokeman's at HomeDepot are Traegers).
Neighbors do all my smoking for half the fish...it's great.
They also use it for a BBQ. They got the 2nd one to replace their fancy gas Webber because they like the Traegers so much.
They go with the electric feed ones so they can get things cooking, set it and forget it.

Re: traeger bbq
As a BBQ Mfg. and Caterer, I constantly look for good sources of Cookin Wood. The best I've found so far is "Northwest Cooking Woods". The owner is Paul Feffer, and hes located of off Sandy Blvd. and 5th Street. He's just down the road from Rick Leach Taxidermy.
He keeps a warehouse full of a large variety of cooking hardwoods/smokin woods/wood chips/wood pellets/and REAL Mesquite Charcoal.
The Company Name is "Fast Track Marketing".
They can be reached at 503-254-0774.
Paul supplies alot of the restaurants, and BBQ houses in the NW.
Plan some time if you go get a supply. He'll sure bend your ear.haha
Tell um JP sent ya.
"Just The Pits" Barbecues
I bring this up because I think he's the only one of his kind in the area, and can do a great service to all of us on IFISH that Hunt/Fish/Q.
Hope this helps all.
JP

Re: traeger bbq
I am on my second one (the first one was too small) I have a Texas style and will never go back to a gas grill. Load the grill with chicken close the lid and come back in 45 mins. Best chicken I've had. No fires to put out and not burnt to a crisp. Better yet with a flick of a switch smoke a full Salmon or Sturgeon fillet. Switch back and BBQ that night. They are they best. As far as pellets, if near by drive to Mt.Angel and stop at Boschlers true value hardware store and buy a 40# bag for $13.00. Order them by the pallet and get them for around $10.50.
