Default American flag disposal

I have had a flag in front of my house for a couple of years now and it's time it was retired.

So, what does one do? I can't just put it in the trash. I wouldn't feel right about that.

What's the protocol for retiring an American flag?

Towards the bottom of the page: Flag etiquette

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning

I think local VFW halls also will accept your flag to be destroyed.

Thanks for the replies and the link.

I think I'll take it to our VFW.

Take it to any of the national guard or reserve units, sherriffs office, etc. Most of the military unit have an Honor Guard that will retire the flag in style

Also: VFW has a whole flag etiquette portion of their website.
