after 13 years, he's gone....
I knew the day would come. Yesturday I had to put my best hunting partner down. I thought i could handle it but i couldnt.. I was in the garage yesturday fiddling around and noticed buddy wasnt around, i went down to the river and there he was, i could tell by the look he gave me he was in trouble, his stomach was bloated, my wife and i rushed him to the er vet, they x-rayed him and his guts where in a knot, the operation to try and fix him was $2500.00+ and the chance of survival was slim. The doc said the best was to put him down, he was in alot of pain. I kneeled down kissed him on the head, told him i would never forget him, and would never love a dog as much as him and they took him away....I sit now typing this with tears running down my face, i look out the window at a empty doghouse, then look around the room at our hunting pictures and the pheasants on the wall. buddy was a german shorthair who loved tennis balls and beer, hated cats and would kill himself finding every last bird, I dont know what it is about losing a bird dog, but they are definitely family. If you got one, cook him a steak tonight and let em in the house....I wish i could.

Sorry for your loss Fishstik. I feel your pain. I experienced the loss of one dog in January. It still hurts. I still have her sister and i too have tried to pet her as much as possible and take her fishing as much as possible. Dogs are the most loyal and loving animal i know of.

It's stories like these that make me spend an extra hour every time I can with my 7 year old springer. Sorry for your loss. Hope some day you can find another dog to treat as well as you treated Buddy. It makes me feel good to know that other dogs have great owners who treat them right.

Re: after 13 years, he's gone....
So sorry for your loss :depressed: . We had to make the decision to have our Springer put down a couple of years ago. It was undoubtedly one of the hardest things we have ever had to do. We still miss Moose and swear sometimes we can hear him click, click, clicking across the floor to come into the bedroom to go to bed! It will get easier as time goes by, but you will never forget all of the good times you shared.

Re: after 13 years, he's gone....
For all you that posted, Thank you! it helps...I get buddys ashes back tomorrow, I am going to spread some of his ashes in our favorite hunting spot this fall, and keep some on the mantle with a photo. I am going to have my gunsmith inlay his dog I.D. tag in my gun stock, so at least some part of him will be with me and emma (my 10 month old shorthair) this fall...people sometimes say to get a puppy when you lose your pal, I thought i was ahead of it by getting a puppy before the old guy left, but that puppy misses him more than anyone..... its so sad to watch her look for him, she knows whats up, it breaks my heart. Give your dog some credit, they know whats up..

Re: after 13 years, he's gone....
You are so right-they do know what's up. Had to put our 14 year old Lab/Samoyed to sleep 2 months ago and we miss her dearly. Our home is pretty empty without her, and we miss her on the boat when we get out on the water. Called her our Good Luck when we went fishing, and come to think about it our "luck" hasn't been as good since she's been gone. Sympathies for your loss too.

Re: after 13 years, he's gone....
Here I was feeling pretty happy, and then I read this. :depressed: I'm so awfully sorry.
I wrote this for Marty Peterson when he lost his best friend. :depressed:
Marty, and my dear family,
It breaks my little canine heart to see you all so sad.
Remember when you took me in your boat, how happy you made me? When my muscles got sore, and you stood at your truck and helped me in? How I wish I could wag my tail for you the way I did that day! How special I felt that you chose to take me with you, as we sped across the water in your sled!
I want to see you smile again, as you come home from a hard day's work, or my kids come home from school. Every day when you came home smiling, you made my day!!
I can still see you, from way up here in heaven, and I am sad that you are so sad. I want to tell you, right now, how happy you've made me, and what a lucky dog I am! I want to look down right now, and see that smile again.. and always!!
I want you to think of me with loving and cheerful thoughts. I want to watch you come home and be happy. (And please hug Mom for me!!)
Yes, I miss you all, but I've lived the most wonderful dog life a dog could live, and it's all because of all of you!
All I want, right now, is for you to know that I will be here waiting. When it is your time to come home, oh will my tail wag and my body wiggle when I see you all!!!
Until then, please keep smiling. I need to see that, because I miss you so much.
The place where I am is so beautiful! Rivers and streams and open beaches, as far as I can see, and I am not held back. I can run, and my body feels like a pup!!
I could run faster, play harder, and explore further, if I could just look down and get that old energy that you always gave me when I saw your smile.
Make my tail wag like you always did!!!
Take your jet sled out on the water, and know that I will always be with you, my dear family. Just look around! You'll see! I will always be with you because of the solid love you gave me.
You know how I know that I'll always be with you?
I had a little talk with God Himself, just this morning. He said that until you and I meet again, that he'd let me share a little corner in His place, in all of your hearts.
I've already moved in.
Put your hand to your heart.
Feel that?
That's my tail wagging, just for you.
Love, always and forever,
Your "Lucky" dog.

I gotta be honest. It was tougher on me to lose my best dog than my own relatives.
Dogs are your constant companion. Mine even goes into the bathroom with me!
It's the worst kind of pain, and I'll be saying a good word for you.

I am sorry to hear of your loss, I know how hard it can be to put your best friend down but you did the right thing and buddy is not hurting anymore.. He is waiting for you in heaven, wagging his tail and getting his toys together for when you two see each other again...
Hang in there....
