Default T-8 Tilt motor not working

Not my engine, but on a friend's boat. Everything electrical on the engine works fine, but the tilt and trim motor just hums when the switch is activated. At least I think it is humming. My son with the sharper hearing says it is. All I could hear were the seagulls and harbor traffic

There have been previous posts about this T-8 problem - I suggest your friend conduct a search.

Yeah...search T-8 tilt problems. Great motors but the trim assembly is the weak link. I know a shop that sells rebuilt assemblies, with the Yamaha installed service bulletin parts in them for about $300-400. Everybody I know in central Wa who has one that's 2 years or older has had a problem with the trim. I just got a new one on mine, thanks to the warranty.
