I've only been there once, but I'll tell you what I know.
First of all it's lure only/barbless hooks....and you really need a boat to fish here. ( My last time out I didn't have one )
As for the bugs, I didn't have any problems with them, but I'd still take plenty of repellent, just in case.
It's also a very scenic spot, just on the edge of the Goat Rocks Wilderness.
