Default Cabo Revisited (food this time)

Recommendations for dining? Looking for the full spectrum. Good food on the beach? Good cheap food? Nice dining locations? Romantic spots? Unique places?

Thanks all.

I thought you were going to expand the family

Do you plan on eating also?

Order room service if you need more energy

watch umm.... interesting movies

plant a seed  ...... or two

When you get home you can eat and sleep

When the family expands, you wont be getting any sleep. Ask Ramstrong when the last time he slept more than a couple hours without getting awakened.

BOE's advice is the best for this trip I think.

If you do want to go eat to try and keep the strenght up try "

The Office" Great breakfast, right on the beach.

The french Restaurant at The Pueblo Bonito Rose' is real good, a bit spendy though.

I always enjoy the Chicken Tacos at the Giggling Marlin.

Mama Romas FOr Italian food, We really like the Pizza. Rela thin crust and then they have a pseto dipping sauce for the homemade bread.

The Trailer park in Cabo and also In San Jose Del Cabo both have real good food.

Biliygans another palce right on the beach is real good also.

There are a lot of great places to eat, it has been a couple years since I have been down there but these were some of our regular stops. I always enjoyed the local food, some people are a bit scared to eat from the vendors but I never had any troubl, might have been the Tequila killed any bad food bugs

BOE, yes, that is exactly why we're going. For that, and to also relax and soak up some sun.

That said, my wife is 5'11", all legs. So yeah, I will need all the strength I can get!

Tex- The Office is about 200 yds up the beach. Can't miss it. One of the best restraunts in Cabo- right in the Hacienda. Try Pea***** too- it's close, ask the Hotel guys! Order the Shrimp plate at the Hacienda pool for an afteroon appetizer, a couple pounds of prawns for 5 bucks or something ridiculous.

Lots of "hot" night spots (Giggleing Marlin, El Squid Row etc) down town around the Marina- and walk around you'll find em. Good for a less formal dinner and you'll love the shows and banter(so will the wife).

Breakfast on the Beach at the Hacienda every morning. Don't even have to get dressed (well- no shoes anyway).

The Trailer Park had great food and great service. Here is the website. Make sure you go to the right one, there is another restaurant with the same name on the main road coming into Cabo.

Hop in a taxi and tell them to take you to "La Brazil". You will love it. All you can eat, steak, chicken, lamb, pork, etc. It's about $15 a person and more than worth it. The "after dinner" drink (included in the $15 was so good I had to order two more. )

Its about a 5 minutes taxi cab ride from the Hacienda. And yes, the hotel restaurant was one of the best we ate at.

Almost forgot, there was a place just up the road from the Giggling Marlin that had steak and lobster tail for $7. (I don't remember the name, but they have a sign on the sidewalk advertising it.)

I agree with all of Firedog's places-we were just there in March. Our best meal actually was on a sunset cruise that went out around "el arco" and they served a group of about 6 of us an excellent dinner and all you can drink cocktails and beer for around $40 US. Mama's Royal Cafe is an excellent breakfast which is up by "El Brasil" which we had bad service at and the food wasn't what I thought it would be. I was comparing it to a place like that in Vegas that we went to once down there and it couldn't quite hold it's own. Other than that, have fun and be careful about dropping a credit card for a bar tab. I just got a $1,700 deal settled with Wells Fargo after someone at El Agave Bar which is an outdoor bar down close to Giggling Marlin and Squid Roe wrote down my numbers and used my card over the next month to the tune of $1,700. Luckily Wells covered all of it. Weird because I got back my debit card last night. No more charging for me in Mexi. All cash/trav checks. Enjoy the sun!

That raises a good question. Do the bars and restaurants all take Visa? Guess I should grab some travellers checks too...just to be safe.

Stuff like the sunset cruise, etc....is that pretty easy to hook up with down there, or do you have to pre book that stuff? Sorry, never been down there.

Tex- When in Mexico.....

Don't leave $40 on the table when paying a $25 dollar dinner and expect any change back UNLESS you ask for change when they pick it up. They expect it as a tip if you lay it down.
Lots of places - you have to pay at a special cage where the cashier is. They don't trust the waiters etc.
The banks have VERY short hours and are always backed up when open- avoid the banks if possible, use the exchange booths to cash your Trav Checks etc. It's worth the small fee.
Visa gives the best exchange rates. Charge it if you can and want.
Everybody takes US dollars- know what the exchange rate is and take a calculator in you pocket. Was very close to 10:1 so it was easy last trip, dont' know now. If you see a price or get told a price say - Pesos? first. (always the cheaper). They will smile and tell you if it's not and it's dollars.
If you're shopping DO NOT pay full price (except the markets/restraunts etc). THey EXPECT you to haggle, 50% off is a general rule. If they won't come down to your price, start to leave. You'll find their best price at that point.
All the big places take Credit cards - keep some cash for the little backwater stuff you run across (renting Snorkel gear on the beach at Santa Maria Cove - taxis etc).
Learn this... When they say 5 minutes (especially if they say 5 Mexican minutes) it means anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Get used to it... relax and don't be in a hurry. THis doens't happen in restraunts though.
Service is KING down there, enjoy it.
Tip the maid, leave some food for her, Toni left behind a bag of clothes she decided she didn't want to pakc home. They are very poor people and will appreciate it. (Even though the Hacienda wil ltell you no tips are needed for all their service, we left the maid goodies and put 10% on the bill to spread amongst the help.)
Tell the Time Share Hawkers - NADA GRACIOUS! and jsut repeat it if they ask again. Otherwise smile and shake your head no! If you say anything else, expect them to hound you. The ones inside the Hotels aren't too pushy (and none in the Hacienda) but the ones downtown and at the airport are merciless).
Expect to get ripped off big time for the taxi from the airport to the hotel. We used a van the first tim e and it was cheaper, but 12 people in a hot van made us fork out the fee fr a taxi/private van the next time.
If you want to get a free meal, some perks (tickets for excursions etc) and a free taxi ride back to the airport, take an offer from one of the time share guys at the airport when you arrive. I recommend the Weston one. We do this, worth a $150 or so and you get a nice drive to the weston and its really ritzy (LONG ways from town though). Just smile and say no thanks at the breakfast- you won't get pressured to much unless you show interest.
We did the time share breakfast at the weston, had the driver drp us at Santa Maria Cove, rented snorkel gear right there on the beach, had a fresh fruit late lunch/snack( the guy carves up watermelon cantalope etc for ya into a cup). then walked up to the Twin Dolphin and caught a taxi back to town. It was a nice day almost free excursion.
Oh- the sunset horseback ride to the beach'old lighthouse on the Pacific side is pretty romantice too. I got a saddle sore (ouch) but it was really nice. It was just me and the wife and our Cabballero (SP?) guide. He thought Toni was "Bonito" She thought it was reeal funny cause she knew what that meant and I couldn't catch what he was saying.
All the businesses Habla Engish, backwater spots, maids etc proly not! Take a Spanish/Engish pocket dictionary in case you need to Habla Espanol!
Enjoy - You'll be hooked!
Almost NO crime in Las Cabos but the wife shouldn't run around by herself unless she doesn't mind getting the Macho thing (whistles and hmm...offers). Especially in tanks tops, shorts or whatever. Expect it, it's a compliment.
Hmm... out of stuff right now!

Miss B Haven has some great advice for ya Tex. We also found that we got one of the best exchange rates from the ATM's Know what the rate is because you get peso's out of the ATM so yo uneed to have an Idea of what you want. Also the exchanges booths will have diferent rates so look around a bit for the best one if you go that route.

Last time we were down, the shuttle bus was alot nicer heading into town than before. AC and clean, was pretty new then also. If you are flying down on ALsaka the terminal is pretty nice, be warned though that you willhave to run the Gauntlet of Tiemshare salesmen on the way out after clearing customs. They will all have a deal for you, don't do it. Go to either the taxi stand or shuttle bus and get into town that way.

Everyone is looking to make a deal on something, tell them no thanks and go have some fun.

There are deals to be had but you have to haggle for them and look around.

A great town overall and a lot of fun.

My favorite restaurant in Cabo (and I've been to almost all of the ones mentioned above) is Mariscos Macambos. It isn't a fancy place, but 1/2 of the reason I go to Cabo is just to eat there. They are located about 6 blocks off the water so you'll want to take a taxi there. You can walk back to the downtown area in about 10 minutes. They make a deep fried Red Snapper that they serve with the whole fish on a plate. It's the most amazing fish I've ever eaten. They also have appetizers of scallops wrapped in a prawn and wrapped in bacon - to die for. I've told several people about this place and all have thanked me upon their return. It's AWESOME! I think the whole Red snapper is like $9 american - very reasonable prices.

Damn! Now I'm hungry!

visit "Mi Casa." its near downtown and is absolutely awesome! i promise you won't be dissappointed. ask the locals or the people in the hotel about some good places to eat as well. take you're wife to "mi casa" then take her back to your casa....

try not to get too tired while you're there, we all know how the "sun" can really wear you out!
