Default lahotnans, redbans, and channels

Hey there guys. Planning a trip in aug from boise. we will be making a loop hitting the owhyee near rome the fist night to plunk for channels, then heading up into the trout creek mtns to catch lahotnans, then on to the donner and blitzen river basin for some red bans the next day. I've never really been in any of these areas. My buddy has fished in the trout creeks before, but that is the extent of our knowledge. Any recent reports and or past experiences with either of these three fisheries would be much apprecieated. Have fished for channels alot out at birch creek, but have never tried the owhyee around rome. Thanks again.

Kill all the cats you'd like but please practice C & R on the native redbands and lahontans down there. They are listed by the state as a locally threatened subspecies and numerous streams in that area are now closed to fishing as a consequence. There's a new survey once every five years, and any declines they notice in the next survey may result in additional closures.

There's lots of desert reservoirs in SE Oregon with chunky---sometimes very big-- rainbows much bigger than what you'd catch in the streams out there. I'd focus on that instead.

All in all, though, the bass in the Owyhee may be a better choice. The heat this time of year will put the trout down except for a narrow window
in the morning and evening.

On the Blitzen, I'd recommend camping at Page Springs (BLM campground). I've spent a few very memorable days hiking upstream into the canyon. Krumbo Reservoir nearby also can fish very well from a small boat or floattube for both planted rainbow and native redband. Have fun, it's a beautiful area. I'd also recommend a drive up to the top of the Steens.
