How do you keep yer smokes dry?
Silly question, but I'm guessing we can get some good info out of this....
A lot of fisher-folks like to sit back and enjoy a smoke while on the water. And this being Oregon, the best fishing is when it's raining. So, how do you keep that pack in yer shirt pocket from getting soaked from the rain, yer sweat, and the never ending spray of fish blood?
I've tried ziplock bags - other than looking like a drug dealer it works ok...until you put a wet hand into the bag to get a smoke.
I've tried the pockets of my raingear, and that works until I fall in the river.
The best way to keep em dry seems to be forgetting them on the dash of the truck.

Re: How do you keep yer smokes dry?
interesting topic, to say the least-
i use a ziplock bag-- and try to limit smoking.. matter of fact, I'm begining to think my lack of fish may be due to the smell of smoke on my line, lures etc. A while back, I poked fun at a fella for wearing white gloves while out fishing, no harm ment, but a learning experience came out of it. I was later informed that the Man with the white gloves is a top oregon guide. I assume he didn't become a guide because of his lack of fishing success, so I too may be trying to mask some oders with my own pair of surgical gloves--

REI sells waterproof, crushproof cigarette cases. You should also be able to find something at your local tobacco store.

Re: How do you keep yer smokes dry?
Go to a heftier smoke.
My cigars take a lot to be officially "wet."
A good cigar with a cup of hot coffee makes the morning. A little rain doesn't hurt the cigar either.
The extras I keep in a baggie in my cooler.

Re: How do you keep yer smokes dry?
Try a pipe! Works great, it can get wet, you can set it down and it will go out, not to mention not having a burning item rolling around your boat, cheaper then cigars. Finally, the smell doesn't seem to bother non-smokers as much.
although that would depend on what you were smoking <gr!>

Re: How do you keep yer smokes dry?
Tinned Fish...I can only guess by your post you are not a duck hunter. Try smoking in 33 degree rain, with a 30+ mph wind!
I just keep mine under the canvas, or in my jacket pocket. Another tip is to wear a REALLY big rimmed hat so you can stand in the rain and 'yer smoke don't get wet while puffin' away. Of couse, Nanooks option works too, but then you have to start bumming smokes because you ran out.

****** and FA..... when you have an open seat, count me in. Not only do I keep my smokes dry, I'll be happy to keep yours dry as well....
No brainer.... quart sized Freezer Ziplocks, and rolled up in my Carhartt jacket pocket. Wet smokes? NOT an issue....

Re: How do you keep yer smokes dry?
I leave mine in the wheelhouse! When I want a smoke I go to the galley, wash
my hands with warm water, dry 'em and pull out a *dry* smoke to light up. If'n I
got people on board who are sensative to smoke I stand out on the back deck under
the roof over-hang. *THAT* works!

I'm with timinthegorge, Ziplocks are the answer. I'm a carpenter and we work (and smoke) rain or shine. Stick your lighter in there too, dry smokes aren't much good with out fire.
