broken toes and no cardio...
I thought I might throw this out to see if someone might be able to give me a hand.
On Monday I had a 60lb pallet come down from about 5 feet up and it pulverized two of my toes. Left toe is busted in four places, next one is snapped in two, had to get a lot of stitches etc. Not fun at all.
I can hobble around with crutches and/or this cool little "moonboot" thingy but that's not my biggest concern.
If you remember a while back some of us were discussing the "Atkins" diet, pros/cons etc. I didn't really follow it but used some of the basics and did a lot of running to get myself about 70lbs lighter. Now that I can't run for many months I don't want to gain that weight back and am exploring some options. Club memberships are going to be too spendy right now so that's out. What I'm hoping is that maybe someone has either an abandoned rowing machine or a fairly modern exercycle kicking around in the garage they might want to loan out for a few months. If the price is tight I 'll even "rent" it from you or work out some sort of barter.
I can even do some trade-off fishing trips if that is more along your line, but I won't be up to that until I can get around a little better.
Thanks,
Mad Mikey the "unipod"

Re: broken toes and no cardio...
Sorry about the accident, Mad Mikey. :depressed:
I don't have any spare equipment, but the is a great idea for at least helping you keep somewhat fit.
For what it is worth, I broke my foot in college and because it felt so much better to keep it elevated (as I am sure you've discovered), I started doing handstands against the wall.
One thing led to another, and I started doing handstand pushups against the wall.
By the time I got my cast off I could do 28 of them!
Lifting won't help the cardio, but it WILL still burn lots of calories. So, if you want your foot to feel better while you get a upper body workout, give it a try!
Get better soon.

Re: broken toes and no cardio...
If you cant do cardio, watch your calorie intake since you wont be burning as many and do a little lifting. The more muscle mass you have the more calories your body burns during the day. Once your foot is healed enough start walking, actually a better fat burning exercise than running. Keeps your heart rate down in the fat burning range and not up in the aerobic range. Good luck

I dont have an exercise bike, but I have a stand that allows you to put a real bike (minus front tire) onto it, fasten the front with quick-release, and peddle. The back wheel spins on a small wheel doohickey. So its just like an exercise bike, only its your real bike.

Re: broken toes and no cardio...
Thanks for the thought CT. I actually have an old dinosaur exercycle but it is the kind where you adjust tension with standard rubber brakes, very unpleasant to ride.

Continue to keep an eye on your carbs, Mikey. That'll help.

Re: broken toes and no cardio...
Again, just writing from experience here...
I would try to find a rower if I were you.
I was at OSU Winter term when I broke my foot and rode my bike all term. The issue was though that with a walking cast (and I suspect your boot) you can't flex your ankle so areobic pedaling is not really possible. It was downstroke only and pretty difficult to get a smoth motion going.
But in a rowing machine the limited motion might not be so bad there.
Good luck. Hope it is feeling better. Sounds puckery!

Mad Mikey (more like busted Mikey?) - we've got a stairmaster thing in the attic hasen't been used in a few years. If that works you can borrow it. Might be an exercise bike up there too!

Re: broken toes and no cardio...
Lunchmeat and cheese-yuk Fresh fruit/water.
5 miler-OK. Can't run anymore though..L4/L5
I had a buckin horse come down on my right foot and crush the nuckle right above my big toe when I was in College. Omygod! I sure hope your foot doesn't hurt that bad. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Took forever to heal. That was back in '73', and it still hurts sometimes.
I'm proud of ya for getting healthy. I need to do more myself. Would like to visit about food/diet/carbs thing someday. I need to make some changes as well.
Take care. Heal up soon.
Keep in touch.
