Default Best rig for crappie in forty feet of water?

My brother and I were sturgon fishing on the willy with no results yesterday so we decided to fish for crappie. We tracked a school of fish in forty feet of water that turned out to be crappie. We only got a few and a nice perch. I was wondering whats the best rig when fishing this deep for these little guys?

I would try a drop-shot type rigging. Use a bit of weight to get the jig/grub down to the school, and work it up and down.......I am assuming you were in a boat.

i learned a new technique from an old guy I met at the docks this year. I have always just used jigs and small cranks before. We put on a jig on the terminal end and about 2 feet above that we used a number 4 hook with little pieces of cut bait. He brought along a few bull heads he caught the night before and we used about 1 inch strips. about 80 percent of the fish we caught that day were off of the cutbait. between 3 of us we caught over 200 in about 3 hours. At 40 feet deep, i bet smell from the cutbait would outfish most lures. Fresh perch would probably work great.
