Default Would you like self-service gas in Oregon?

The latest bill to allow self-service gas in Oregon looks to have stalled out in the House again, unable to get the votes necessary to make it out. So far, only Oregon and New Jersey do not allow self-service gas.

Would you like self-service gas in Oregon, or are you happy with letting someone else do it for you?

If it lowers the cost, yes. However, gas ain't that much cheaper in Washington.

this is the only place I've lived where you DON'T pump your own gas-

unemployment is sure to climb even higher if this happens though-- and the difference in gas prices really isn't that significant to warrant the amount of people that will be out of work-- I vote yes though, as I hate waiting for the guy to come around--

The difference is not so great now that you have to go inside to pay damned near everywhere anyway. It would actually be faster nowadays to just do it all yourself anyway. Don't get me started....

and I used to be a gas monkey myself.....

Full serve stations used to be competitive for thier "service" and not the quality of the gas, or even the price. Though I am not quite ripe enough to remember the days of old when four or five "attendants" would rush to your car and scrub the windshield, check the erl and shine your tires with a greasy rag, I imagine the professional role of fuel attendant is still a valuable possition in todays struggling economy.

Is the measure an attempt to increase the unemployment rate in the state of Oregon? Just what we need eh? Raise the unemployment rate yet lower the price of gas and in a few months, we will all have to pump our own gas AND pay a gas tax to supliment the state service increase for the families who need food stamps... 'cause daddy lost his job at the petromart.

I don't want to pump my own gas,if it goes to self serve I bet most stations will have a full services area for people like me.

as one who has lived in Oregon my entire life, I hate when I go to California and sit at the gas station waiting for the guy to come out and pump my gas. I usually wait a good minute or 2 before I catch on and get out of my car and pump my own gas. All the while trying to look like "I MEANT to do that".

One reason I love my diesel is I can pump my own fuel.

Funny how when I go to Washington or Calif. it is so much faster to get out, slide the card, fill, and off you go. And the tank is full. No waiting for an attendant to finish yapping at his/her buddies instead of doing their job.

It’s absolutely ridiculous we can’t pump our own gas. I know the state fire marshal has issues with people dispensing gas. Maybe he ought to come fill up my lawn mower and tiller up for me. It’s so darn difficult.

Yes to self-serve! (Sorry Toni, no princesses allowed! )

I'm not voting. No option for "Yes, if price comes down". If price holds constant, then no, I dont want it.

I don't care if the price doesn't come down. My time is worth something, and having to wait for the attendant to start the fill and end the fill is aggrivating. Let me do it myself.

I think it is ridiculous that we cannot pump our own....thay should have both "self serve " and "full serve" for those that don`t mind paying a little extra for someone to pump your gas and clean the windshield. It will probably never happen tho so that we can hang on to all those quality jobs pumping gas....

Here is how it goes, folks: First they add self service along with full service pumps. Then, in very short order, the full service pumps go away or you are left sitting at full service while the one and only attendant collects from the self service people. Next the full service vanishes.

Don't believe me? Cross over to Vancouver and see how long it takes for you to get your tank filled without getting out of the car!

In my relatively frequent travel to WA, CA, NV etc. I find gas costs more than it does in Oregon. CB is right...if self-serve is allowed, full serve either goes away completely or costs considerably more than we pay now. And where I buy gas the attendants rarely take more than a few seconds to walk up...often before I can get my credit card...so I like things just like they are now.

As far as gas costing the same up here in WA. Don't forget that we've got the highest gas taxes in the nation.
And they just voted for another 5 cent/gallon tax.

No on self serve. I say preserve the jobs. The price won't come down the profits will just be pocketed.

I pump my own diesel on occassion and I always do the fill on my boat.

When I'm dressed up for a date or formal event I do not want to pump fuel. It seems that is always when you run into the leaky nozzel or some slob has pumped a gallon of fuel on the ground for you track back into the rig.

Since I lived in WA for a few years I'm famillair with the pro and con.

If you don't have the patience to be served at the pump lay off the cotton pickin latte's and dink some chamomile tea for Gods sake.

I hate waiting for the guy to get off his/her butt and come fill er up. When I fill up in WA I can get an additional 4 gal in the tank. That makes the difference between driving straight through to Idaho and having to stop. I drive 50-60K/year and can't wait until we can have self serve. The funniest thing I ever saw was a guy in training at a station; he just couldn't get it not a clue on how to pump gas.

I had a hard time letting someone else pump my gas when I first moved here. Now, I don't give it much thought.

I have noticed that there are more than a few out there who would find it very difficult finding another line of work if we did switch. I am not trying to be mean, they do a great job, and honest job. This is the wrong time in our economy to look for ways to get rid of jobs (other than those in the legislature and their staffing).

I already pump my own gas via Pacific Pride. As far as I'm concerned, you should have the choice to pump your own. They'll still have the "Full Service" island for those of you that don't want to get out in the rain and get the smell of gas all over you. I'm not sure what that's all about... I heard something about the bill requiring service stations to have full service, but I didn't pay to much attention to it.

The last time I went to full service lane in Washington the price was 50 cents more a gallon than self service. That is a joke.

Traveling all over the country finds gas prices no cheaper there than here. We have attendants, they do not. We pay the same (for the most part)

If they were honest about saving money if we went to pumping our own gas (which,by the way they are not) then they could prove it by offering both services for the same price. HA....Notttttttttt

This would cut down on the number of attendants each station had to employ, but not eliminate all jobs. Problem is, it will never happen because they cannot and will not save us any money on self pumped gas. Does anybody really buy this line when they feed it to us???

Gas is a monopoly folks, just ask Ron Wyden.

The original reason for the prohibition on self serve in Oregon was to keep quickmart stores from selling gas in competition to the gas stations. Gas station owners lobbied for the law, years ago. Since nearly every gas station is now also a quick mart, seems like that battle is lost.

The cost of gas is driven mostly by the underlying price of the fuel, which is highly controlled by the oil companies, and the real estate. I looked into purchasing gas staions/quick marts a while back, and it was amazing how much those two costs drove the finances of the station.

The gas companies are allowed to do an amazing amount of price fixing. I don't understand how it can be legal. Up here, they are allowed to sell the gas to one station for, say, 1.25, and to another station across the street for 1.35. Independent distributors get cut off by the refinery if they try to undercut the majors. Nice to be a monopoly.

On the self service question, I hate waiting for the attendant. Too type A, I guess.

Did you know that in other states you can buy and pump your own gas at some Costcos? I think that by allowing more places sell gas would help break up the price fixing.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">It amazes me that Costco sells gas in Oregon(Albany and Warrenton, that I know of). Their attendants get paid on the same scale just like the rest of the employees, and that's a lot more than any other pump jockey. As competitive as gas is, I don't see how they can afford it.

I used to want to keep it for the jobs it supplied to teenagers and college students but it seems the only people working there now are the bottom feeders of society. They are rude, don't care how long you have to wait and they slop gas all over your car. I would rather do it myself.

Isuspect that Costco can afford to do so for the same reasons that they can afford to do other things so cheap: purchasing power, efficient corporate structure, low advertising/marketing budget, and very high volume.

On the gas at Costco issue, actually they lose their proverbial butts on gas. They do it more for a service to their members than to make money on it.The price of gas is so up and down,of you buy a load at say 1.50 a gallon, then in a day the price goes down they have to lower the price to keep lower than competition. Its just an endless squirrel cage and my understanding is ,its more a service for the members than a money making thing.
