Default Wickiup 7/11 (Updated)

I fished Wickiup Friday evening with Moknots. It was a windy one, and kind of hard to fish. Moknots got 4 fish and a real dandy 18 incher. I landed two. They all came on some kind of pink hoochie. I hooked but did not land what looked like a 20+ inch brown that did a nice aerial display.

The next morning my son-in-law and I were on the water at 7:30am. The bite was slow until about 9 when it started to pick up. Again it was an all pink hoochie show. We found that different pink hoochie colors matched with different dodgers was the key to staying on the bite. At first is was a pink R&K hoochie matched with a Jenson 4/0 dodger. Later a Shasta Tackle (ST) Cotton Candy hoochie matched with a large ST sling blade with UV tape was a producer. After that a Rocky Mountain Tackle (RMT) UV pink matched with the ST sling blade. Also working was the R&K pink hoochie with a ST black diamond sling blade. The fish hitting this set-up were not as aggressive and many of those hook ups did not stick. It was pretty consistent until 11:30 when thinks slowed way down. We tried the pink assassin spinners and had some luck with the pink and hot pink/chartreuse. After that a dark red hoochie behind a 4/0 watermelon Seps dodger work a short while. I caught one on a Darth Raider FWG set-up and one on a Caribbean hoochie from RMT. At 3:30 the pink UV and the R&K pink with the 4/0 dodger started getting bit again. These did not stick very well and we lost many of them (LDR).

We fished mainly in the Deschutes channel between Gull Point and the David arm. Most of the fish came at 30 to 35 feet deep. A few were caught at 25. We trolled at 1.2 mph. This was my second trip this season where corn ruled over maggots. Garlic and Shrimp were the hot scents.

We finished the day with 28 fish, had a bunch of LDR and many strikes that did not stick. About half were right a 16 inches, a quarter were between 16-17 inches and the rest were smaller with the smallest being 14 inches. I lost one at the boat that at first I thought was a big rainbow, but after getting a good look it was a very big Kokanee. It was easily bigger than anything else we caught.

My son-in-law with a typical sized Kokanee.

Good job brian.

I can't wait to get back over and try again.

I know how often you change gear and that seems to be the key when the bite stops.

So glad that it was the year for wickiup, easy to get to and now easy launching.

We will try and hook up my next trip over..

And I wen't with no downrigger, hoochie, wedding rings, trolling rod, dodgers, or flashers, I knew that was the only way I would Jig. And did I pay for it.

Thanks for the open seat Friday eve! You looked a little tired at the end, but you look great with that 18" koke. And thanks for the schooling on Saturday!

FRG-Nice report and great fish catching there! That big one is just a bruiser of a kokanee- no- he's graduated to a full-fledged salmon! Just WOW!

Brian,

Your board meetings are having an effect on the gene pool and the water level of that lake.

Hey Chris, dont feel bad, was up there Sunday moning, jigged for 5 hours, and you guessed it, the big O. Out of three of us in the boat, only one on a jig, and two on bait. Marked lots of fish moving by, just not to willing to bite, and I treid every variable I could think of.

Amazing Kokes Brian. You know, it is legal to send smoked kokanee to a foreign military address.

I took most of my girls to Wickiup on the 13th-15th. We brought home 13 very nice koke's in 3 partial days of fishing. Our two largest were both right at 18.25 inches and both bucks. Our smallest was about 14 inches. We got 3 on green hootchies & all the rest on pink hootchies. Most were picked up between 25-35 feet on the downriggers in 45-60 feet of water, most up around the dam area. We lost probably twice that many with the 5 & 10 year olds manning the rods.

We talked to some guys on Wednesday afternoon who were bait fishing in the Davis Crk arm in about 30-35 feet of water. The three of them had 8 in the boat and they said it was the best bite they had in 2 days.

We never found large schools of fish. The males are starting to show a little hook nose, but no discoloration. A unique catch was had on Tuesday. We were in about 50 feet of water, downrigger set at 21 feet and a catfish hit a green hootchie behind a flasher. Who would have thought. He was about 12 inches long & was gently released back.

And yes, the BUGS were bad from the time it hit about 70 degrees until we left in mid afternoon. They seemed to love to stick in your hair and anywhere sunscreen acted like glue! There were lots of fish surfacing at times, but we never took a koke up high.

Thanks to FRG for the tips before the trip!

Job well done to the two of ya... I see I still have alot to learn from the two of you Mokonts and FRG... Hats off to ya... wish Shannon and I could have got in to some like that a few weeks back.. we were running the same colors and found the best luck by changing pinks every so often... but then like i said in the other thread, we werent really trying that hard...

congrats to the two of you...

We fished the whole weekend and had very little luck. Seemed like everyone in camp was missing, except you obviously. Next time downriggers and larger hoochies. Great catch!

Talked to a guy who was up there Tue-Thur, 3 fish per day avg, best bite was very early, 5:30 am. He was only fishing in the morning, so can't say what the evening bite was like. From all reports, it seems the bite was a little hotter last week.
