Default What kind of leader are you?

From my archives...

Ten Differentiating Factors
between the best and worst leaders

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Joe Folkman, author of “Employee Surveys that make a difference” concludes that there are ten factors that differentiate effective leaders from ineffective ones. Here is his list:

Getting results - they make things happen rather than letting things happen.

Integrity: walking your talk - they practise what they preach.

Trust and respect - they are respected and trusted by those with whom they work.

Vision and confidence in the future - they provide a definite sense of direction and purpose, and people feel the company is going places.

Organization - they are organized and know what to do next; they anticipate problems and work on them before they become crisis.

Persuasion - they are able to persuade others to accept their position; they champion projects so others understand and support them.

Inspiration - they energize others to go the extra mile and inspire them to care about and strive for excellence.

Innovation and experimentation - they constructively challenge others to question the usual way of looking at things.

Analytical technical competence - they are able to make effective business decisions based on excellent understanding of financial, economic, market and organisational data.

People skills and consideration - even in disagreement, they listen and respect the views of others; they are considerate of others’ interests when making decisions or formulating policies.

Dr. Folkman is a founding partner of BT. Novations (part of the Provant Group). He has over 25 years of research in the area of organisational diagnosis, management assessment, individual and organisational change. He is also the author of “Turning Feedback into Change.”

Clearly, this post relates to public, not military life!
For example persuasion. In public life, a leader might try and persuade his employees to work harder through incentives, and "strokes".
In the military it's: "Hey you pussbelleyed SOB!!! MOVE MOVE MOVE MOVE!!!!!!! (Insert boot squarely in rump here) MOVE MOVE MOVE!!!!!!!!
In public life, their are laws that dictate leadership decorum, in the military there are ways of life. Every other word can be a cuss word, and if you are not motivated by a Drill Sargeant's speech--he will find another, far worse way to motivate you.
The one thing that you can count on though--he may not be a real sweet guy, but he has your safety at heart, and probably cares more about you than you'll ever know.
Maybe that's why I am such a crass SOB! Crass, yes, but a succesful leader in the right circle of people, and loyal as your labrador.
That is what I see as truly important leadership qualities. I don't care what you call me--cover my back, and be there for me if I need you (reciprocal of course), and you have the best kind of leadership, and relationship there is. One you can bet your life, not just your livelihood on.
