Default Coast Guard Operator's License

What's the best way to obtain this license, I think it would be a great course to go through. Exspecially fishing B-10 and other high risk area's. Any idea's on where to go and the cost? Any help would be great. EH

The only place in the Portland/ Vancouver area is Fryar's Maritime School in Vancouver. Phone # is 360 737 8022. The next closest after that is Clatsop Community College in Astoria.
Good luck.

I took the class from Clatsop Community College and it was pretty good. We were on the river more than in the classroom, and did lots of hands-on drills. We ran up and down the big river and dodged the ships, barges, gillnetters, pilings, and sandbars. We went out past Hammond and played in the current and tides, then motored up to Cathlamette, taking turns at the helm. We even did some man overboard drills and spent some time anchoring (not necessarily a piece of cake).

The course was the Limited Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (LOUPV) and if I remember, it was about $245.

Good course, but only part of the puzzle. Nothing takes the place of time on the water, that experience thing.

Elkhunter, I have had my license since the mid 80's. You need to speak to the Coast Guard [licesing office at Swan Island] and see what type of license you qualify for. There are sea time requirements for most. As for the guide type license I'm clueless. None of it is cheap any more. You pay for schooling, then you pay the Coasties to test, then you pay for them to file your paperwork and issue the license. It can really add up in a hurry.
tight lines... you can pm me and I'll give you my phone # if I can help more.

You cannot beat Fryar. I highly recommend him. I know many people first hand who have gotten preped for all types of coast guard licenses.

Yahoo for Fryars! I think his first name is Mike. I am so disappointed with my current job that Guiding sounds so good. I sure wish I could afford to have a decent boat to go fishing in. Good boats run 10 grand or better. I go hunting at boatbankrepo.com....As soon as I pay off my child support (yes I pay!) there is a boat waiting for me somewhere. I hope I dont offend anyone because I am a woman liking to fish. Thx-judyfish99

i know mike really well and it takes about a month to do the classes. it cost 750 for the master course and 720 days of time on the water. the oupv test is about the same price and takes 360 days on the water to qualify. hope that helped. it is tough to get through. lots of book work. it takes an average of 20 8 hour days of school to get the master test done.

I took the class at MERTS campus. Because I had time on the water I only had to take the five days in the classroom. I'm no spring chicken so I thought it was a tough five days. But it is worth every minute and every dollar. Personally, I do better in a structured classroom then in a assisted selfpaced style like Fryers. Mike is an excellent teacher, but I felt I would just do better at the college.
