Default Lost Lake-Hood River

I am finally getting my Dad to take a few days off of work and have convinced him to go camping and fishing up at Lost Lake.

He has never caught many fish on a fly, and I would love for him to have some success and get addicted to it. Any advice you can give on flys and locations on that lake, or lakes in general would be great. Thanks for the help.

This lake is very deep and not easy to fish in its middle (I think like 160 feet deep +). Silver and blue streamers that imitate juvenile Kokenee can be used with a very fast sink tip towards the middle of the lake and can produce BIG fish but you will have to work hard for that one strike. I would concentrate closer to shore.

This lake is best fly fished from either a boat or float tube (Note no motors are allowed) but still closer to shore. You will be able to see structure and depths without problem since the lake is almost always crystal clear.

Since this is a mountain lake with large trees right on its shore line terrestrial bugs such as beetles, bees, ants and termites are always falling into the water and the fish know this and usually are always happy to chow on them. Then of course pulling Wullie Buggers is another option. But the on and off early evening hatch of the Hexagina can be some of the best fishing on the lake. It is almost exclusively what I fish on that lake anymore. The hatch can be phenomenal one night and a total no show the next. But if you hit it right those last few hours of light can be some of the best lake trout fishing around.

The rock slide is always a popular place to fish

Make sure to try and get there early for a camp site as the prime spots tend to fill up rather early.

Have fun and let me know how it was for you. Nookslayer and I (with families) will be headed that way next weekend.

Yes we will! Look for two guys floggin the water on the far side of the lake around dusk. Meskel can be identified by the bottle of Maker's Mark attached to his float tube.

nice, for me it's sometimes a can of guinness...or some other form of barley-produced alcohol...

please post a report...

about a month ago I fished it and hooked into something very large near that rock slide that came unbuttoned within about 10 seconds...

I am pretty inexperienced on that lake, is the rock slide a pretty easily identifiable place to fish? I have a drift boat so we should be able to cover the good parts of the lake.

Thanks for the help, we will be up there M-W, I will post a report as soon as I get back.

Thanks again!

Years ago did well on muddlers, cast into the bank and retrieve back to boat. #18 adams always works good on the small ones once you find them rising.

Come now Nook you should know better - Makers is for the Deschutes so as I can get whisky drunk and paying homage.

Knob creak is for Lost Lake.

Just got back from Lost Lake. We had a great time. The fishing was only so-so, but that was ok. My Dad caught one one a fly, which was the plan. He just kept saying how he wants to go back and do it again. Thanks for the help with fly selection.

Glad to hear the trip went well Tuce.

Meskel, forgive me. I forgot about "homage rock" and the Makers required at its altar.

No hex hatch, but we are going to be back up there in August, so hopefully we hit the right nights and get to see one.

Meskel and I did hit the Hex hatch although it was still fairly light. The ticket is to head out right at dusk and be on the water casting as the bugs start to hit the surface. The fish have already been keying on emergers once you can see them. The best pattern we had was an emerger pattern that Meskel had tied up. With little effort we landed about 8 fish in an hour between the two of us.
