What are your go to nymphs and wet flies?
Just curious, I know on dry flies, sometimes its important to match the hatch, but when nymphing or fishing a wet fly, or something like a bugger, what are your guys' go to flies when nothing "local" seems to be working?
Im talking specifically about files for fishing trout. I know results may vary and Im in Utah, but Im just curious.

When there is no specific hatch and searching for something that will work, I always try something with peacock herl in the body first. I'm not stuck on any specific pattern.

Re: What are your go to nymphs and wet flies?
1. prince
2. hares ear
3. copper john or green copper john
If you can't match whats coming off or nothing is, I go to these as "prospecting" nymphs.

I always have a Mega prince tied on. Then i drop a small nymph that resembles something that might be hatching. And a softhackle is deadly sometimes if you swing it at the end of your drift or even drop it under a dry.

Drk brown stones and bead head hares ear for rivers...
Green bead head flashy bugger for lakes...
These always seem to pick up the slack when others are letting me down.

Re: What are your go to nymphs and wet flies?
The above are great. If you're talking rivers, I would add swinging a soft hackle or maybe even a woolie bugger. If fish are rising and I'm coming up empty, I'll sometimes trail a sparkle pupa or midge pattern from a larger dry fly. In lakes, I like to strip streamers, especially buggers and leeches, experimenting a lot with speeds and almost always in riffled water. For some reason, a red mini-leech works well for me as a general searching pattern and I'll sometimes tie it on at home, to be my first fly.

Re: What are your go to nymphs and wet flies?
for some reason, i forgot about the woolly bugger. probably my favorite fly to tie and they can be made out of anything. its the only fly i fish in lakes if the fish are not rising.

How about a Shop Vac. When I guided on the Madison it plain sucked up the trout! I'll try to post a pic this weekend for y'all.

I can usually count on one of the following patterns to bring strikes: Bead Head Bugger, Carey Special and Flashback Hares Ear.
