Default 99W and Dundee?

Came through there today on my journey's back from Portland/Vancouver/Longview and hit that area on a Thursday about 4:00PM. It was stop & go for a couple miles approaching the lane change from one lane to two lanes and the one and only light in Dundee. I thought I was home free that far from Portland. Wrong!

Can't they do something about that area and maybe make a by-pass or bridge with on & off ramps and somehow alleviate the congestion there? This was a Thursday early afternoon (non summertime).

It does that every...single...day.
Did you notice the sign at the east end of town that says, "Great Divide Highway. Named for dividing the livability of Dundee." (or something like that)
If anybody knows what that is all about, please chime in. I'm under the impression that there's some sort of local fight going on down there. There's also a sign that says "No village of winos."
If they would build a bypass around Dundee and Newberg I'd be a happy camper (and truck driver).

The signs are the typical local fight. Many of the people there have NIMBY over wineries, wine tasting events, restaurants, and generally anything that doesn't fit into the reason they moved to Dundee to begin with. The "Divided Dundee" sign means that 99W, with it's traffic, has divided Dundee. You almost NEVER see any pedestrian brave enough to try and cross the street there anymore, I don't blame them.

There are actually plans in movement right now for going ahead with the bypass. According to the Yamhill Co. commissioner I talked to, they've got the options narrowed down, and are ready to proceed with the plan review and land acquisition phase. Realistically, I think it's still about 8-10 years away from being a reality.

Just think, if Barbara Roberts would've negotiated with the Grande Ronde instead of fighting the casino tooth and nail, they probably could've cut a deal over casino money helping to finance the bypass.

BTW, in the early 70's, there was state and federal money in place, and plans were approved, for a 4-lane bypass to leave I-5 at Donald, cut across county, bridge the river, and hit 99W where the Hwy 18 bypass is at now (between Dundee and Lafayette). A new group of county commissioners in Yamhill county, running on a NIMBY platform, squashed the whole thing just before money was dispersed.

I hope they and there descendants have to drive back and forth between Mcminnville and Newberg every day, all summer long.

I think I moved to Newberg in 1979(?) and there has been talk about a
by-pass around Newberg/Dundee since I moved there! I'm not holding my
breath!!

BTW, when are they going to put a by-pass around Stinkin' City ... Opps,
I mean Lincoln City?? Driving thru *that* town is even more painful than
the Newberg/Dundee drive (IMHO).

yep, been talking about it a long time, I was there from 64-84, and still have family there. The mind set of the little towns on 99 just kills me. Once you could get from from Newberg to Portland in 30 minutes, I did it daily, now it is an hour. Why, One major reason is all the new traffic lights being put on 99W. Newberg does it, and now sherwood is going crazy doing it. Plus the Tualatin in route to I5. These little towns should not be able to chock these rural routes so badly. Frontage roads were discussed to alleviate the problem, but that was short lived in Sherwood by short sighted developers in that town.

Newberg has been talking about bypasses (and not having one) for a long time. The only plan I have heard so far that they might support is a Toll road.

I thought maybe the "Divided Dundee" sign was because the wineries are on one side and the longtime residents are on the other?

All I know is that is the worst part of my commute to the coast and Lincoln City is a very close second.

The NICE part about Licoln City is that at 4:30 - 5:00 in the morning the
road is free of traffic and it's a 45-50 mph road! At that speed you can
even hit all the lights green!! (for the most part.)

Dundee could provide some sort of short bypass easy enough or at least some relief, right when you enter town coming from newberg there use to be a road that cut toward the Willamette and came back around to 99W after Dundee past the gun club, but they closed access to it several years ago.

Gus,

Shhh, don't tell anybody else, but if you make a left hand turn at the light
in Dundee the road will take you around town and drop you out the other side ...
or if you make the left turn right before the gravel road gets back on the
highway it drops you off up further towards the by-pass around McMinville.

Just between you-and-me, OK??

OK assassin, this zipperlip road you're talking about. Is it when you are traveling eastbound or westbound you make the left?

Problem is when you are traveling westbound and finally get to the light, you are free and clear anyway aren't you? I suspect you are talkind westbound since you mentioned McMinnville. Seems like there are hills to the north side of the highway. Might pay off to scout that one out. Oh, and I promise to tell not a sole. My lips are sealed.

Thing is, once you get to that light in Dundee you're past the worst of it. A big part of the problem are the drivers who get in the right lane (westbound) and race around everybody who's lining up in the left lane, then cut back in when the right lane ends. If I'm in my big truck, I'll block that right lane as long as I can. It speeds things up considerably. I tried it in my pickup, but people will just get on the shoulder and go around.

Funny that Gus mentioned Sherwood. The same traffic management disease that infected Tualatin has spread to Sherwood. I used to go down Tualatin-Sherwood Rd to get to 99W from I5, but it's become a nightmare with lights every 2 blocks. Even in the middle of the night it sucks.

Not sure waht you guys problem is. There IS a bypass around all those dang lights and little "cities".
I can go from Scappoose to Dopey Bay and never hit a light or a speed limit.

For some reason it still takes me about 12 hrs to run it though and about 200 gallons of diesel fuel!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Of course you knew about the back way around Devils Lake? Don't know if it helps much time wise but at least you don't have all the lights and traffic. Just don't tell anyone about it.

Guess I'm used to Lincoln City now days. it doesn't seem to bother me anymore and I used to hate the drive through there. At least it doesn't come to a stand still as does Dundee.

One thing I have noticed the last couple times traveling through Dundee that is cool is that the semi's or big trucks traveling through there keep pace with the auto's in the other lane and keep it blocked off so the impatient (like me) don't cut lanes and cut in front of others.

depoebaydan,,,there are still a lot of deer not far off of 99. I have seen many large bucks down the corridor and towards Scholls to this day. Funny thing too, not 4 years ago there was still herd of elk living between the Lutheran Church and the Tualatin river, one nice bull and a spike in that bunch.

There also was a small her between Tualatin and Sherwood but I think much of that land got developed in the last few years.

1 1/2 hrs unless I hit Seaside at rush hour, then it's an hour and 31 minutes!

I don't think it's 200 miles one way to the "ranch" Dan!

Are you going on the Tillamook Forest Tour tomorrow Mel? Sounds like a good time! I'm looking forward to learning about logging and habitat also.

Not to bad a drive for you and you don't even have to go through Dundee.

I beat you though! Hope that wasn't you I flipped the finger at yesterday! No, just kidding. I appreciate the truck drivers doing that. Good move.

The biggest 4 point buck I ever shot was within a mile of the old 6 corners intersection. How things have changed! That was an improvement there though. That old intersection was a nightmare!
