Re: Earthquake..REAL DEAL
No fun to be in one. Were to far away this time. The last one we had in seattle was a 6.8 it was 2 years ago. That is enough to last me a lifetime. No fun being under your repair bench at work listening to thing fall around you. Then their is the 3 hour drive home that usually takes 25 minutes because none of the street lights are working.

Re: Earthquake..REAL DEAL
Tell me about it. I lived in Los Angeles until 1989. I've had my share of quakes.
For realtime information on quakes in the region, you can go here: Quake info The site also allows you to record what you felt and your reaction to it. All it requires is your zip code (although it asks for other info, too). Check it out.

Re: Earthquake..REAL DEAL
I've been torn about whether to post this or not, but I guess I should share...
I've received training by FEMA in emergency response. I'm actually a certified Community Emergency Response Team instructor.
What I've learned about the threat of a REALLY big earthquake in the pacific northwest would curl your toes. It is real and it is imminent.
Notice all the billboards around town that mention a "72-hour kit" - you think that's just about terrorism? Think about it. They've been around since before 9/11.
We're talking subduction earthquake greater that NINE on the richter scale. But guess what? It is completely survivable if you know what to do and you are prepared.
Contact your local fire department and ask about their Community Emergency Response programs. Many communities offer free training. I know of programs in Hillsboro, Portland and Gresham off-hand.

Re: Earthquake..REAL DEAL
Pilars Mate, I lived in the LA area until 89 also. I wasn't too far from the big one there in 71. Now THOSE are quakes! The one today was hardly noticable. But from what the experts are saying, we're in for a doozy here at some point. I just hope I'm not on the 10th floor of this building downtown when it happens! That's my only worry....lots of old buildings downtown that won't fair too well.

Re: Earthquake..REAL DEAL
Please take the time to fill out the following form.
USGS Did You Feel It? report. It helps in increasing accuracy of damage assesments and other characteristics of the event.
Thanks

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Dont remind me of that one. I was transfered to Tulsa a week after the OKC bombing. Spent a lot of time over there for work, and went by the site on every visit to see the progress, read the notes on the fence...so sad. :depressed: Buildings that were 12, 14, 20+ blocks away had windows blown out. Hard to believe that people would want to do that stuff.
Ok...now I am sad. Someone cheer me up.

Re: Earthquake..REAL DEAL
CT - I'm sorry!
I was saving this, but since you need some cheer (and it is a Texan joke) here ya go!
A Texan farmer goes to Australia for a vacation. There he meets an Aussie farmer and gets talking. The Aussie shows off his big wheat field and the Texan says, "Oh! We have wheat fields that are at least twice as large."
Then they walk around the ranch a little, and the Aussie shows off his herd of cattle. The Texan immediately says, "We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows."
The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field. He asks, "And what are those?"
The Aussie replies with an incredulous ok, "Don't you have any grasshoppers in Texas?"

Re: Earthquake..REAL DEAL
Pilar's Mate is correct about the toe curling thing.
I have been websurf researching the Cascadia Subduction Zone for a couple years now. We are currently in "the window" for the next fault rupture. A full fault rupture along the locked zone could result in a wide spread 9.0+ earthquake causing heavy destruction from Northern California to B.C.. Massive tsunami(s) will rush inland for miles in the lower areas due to the subsidence of the North American plate.
This will be a nasty piece of business for those who will witness the event first hand. At the time of the event, only a handfull of people will have an appreciation of the magnitude and significance of what is occuring.
A few minutes after the Jaun de Fuca and North American plates stop wrestling, us inlanders will be trying to figure out which way is up while the coastals areas will be inundated with water. Seattle and Portland will suffer great losses.
None of this will be known until we find the battery operated radio, some batteries and the radio stations come back on the air (electricity.
Apocalyptic? For those people in the Pacific Northwest at the time, it will be nothing less.
The strongest earthquake I have been in was 5.0. It is difficult to imagine something 10,000 times more powerfull.
Do you have your emergency kit ready?
Here are a few quick links.
Cascadia Subduction Zone 1
Cascadia Subduction Zone 2
Cascadia Subduction Zone 3

Re: Earthquake..REAL DEAL
We caught the tail end here in Beaverton. I didn't feel it, but heard the false ceiling creak and my monitor wiggled a bit. Strange. Thanks for confirming that it was a 'quake.
