Goodbye to Buddy
I just had to put down my Black Lab, Buddy today and I thought that it would help my greivng process if I told you a little about him..
He was 11yrs old and had cancer of the mouth. He was one of the sweetest dogs ever. Everyone who met him just loved Buddy, while he wasnt the greatest hunting dog and his swimming style sometimes looked like a man trying to play the piano with Hammers, he was my best friend..What he could do was almost turn himself into a "C" to make sure you would scratch his butt in just the right spot. He could also sit up next to you like a human and watch TV, which always made my friends laugh.. He would sit by the window and look for me to come home from work and then he would go and get his toy and meet me at the door,I think that I am going to miss that the most...He is now in doggie Heaven and isnt hurting anymore but I am going to miss him very much but I know someday we will be playing together again as he is my forever dog...
Thank you for letting me share this with you and I wish more of you could of met him as he was one special boy...
JJ

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
jimmy jig ... Man that got to me.
There is no finer friend than one with 4 paws and a wet nose. I miss my old dog every day.
Your old buddy is thankful for his master and his master's wisdom about ending his suffering. Maybe I am stretching it a bit with wishful thinking but my dog had a look of love and gratitude in her eyes when I held her for the last time at the vets office.

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
Jimmy - Sad news! I hope that perhaps this might help a little with the grieving:
A Dog's Prayer
Beth Norman Harris
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Treat me kindly, my beloved master,
for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your
devoted worshipper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.
And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands. Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

My Golden does the C turn too...pretty cute stuff. For what its worth, I have a couple of dogs up there to keep Buddy company.

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
So sorry for your loss. We had to have our Springer Spaniel put down a couple of years ago. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I still miss him and his goofy dog smile when I would ask him if he wanted to go for a walk. Moose is in doggy heaven now and one day we will be together again. It will get easier as time goes by, but you will never forget him and all the good times.

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
Very sorry to hear. My life is much richer with a lab. I will never again be without.
I will never be able to find the words to help someone feel better from a loss like this. Another pup, in due time, will make you feel better.

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
Sad day, jimmyJig. :depressed:
My chocolate is 12-1/2 years old now, and I know that day is coming. I try not to think about it, but it's tough when I see how old she's getting.
She's had a good life, and it sounds like Buddy did too.

Sorry for your loss. I have a Springer Spaniel that is my shadow. She is my best friend and the bond we have unreal. She seems to know my thoughts and moods. I can't seem to breath when I think about loosing her. She is 4 1/2 years young and has the sweetest heart I have ever seen.
You did the right thing. I hope I too can be that brave when the time comes :depressed:

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
Sorry to hear you lost Buddy. :depressed: Dogs are so co-dependent that when we lose them, it is like losing a child at times. :depressed: I can relate to your loss. Maybe you will be able to seek out a new puppy in time after you heal. Nothing like, potie training, couch, chair, and shoe, teething, and endless yapping to sooth the heart.

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
My lab is also my best buddy. He is 6 1/2 yrs old now and I often worry about that inevitable day when he will be gone. "Cash" is a 100 lb lap dog who gets up with me in the morning to see me off to work and sits by the door anxiously awaiting my return, usually with one of my old sneakers in his mouth. As a fellow dog owner I understand your loss. God Bless Buddy, a great and loyal friend.

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
I lost my beloved 2 years ago.
I feel better now that I have another dog. Believe me, it does help. You'll never forget your 'best' dog, though...even if all of them qualify under that heading.

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
I feel for your loss more than I want to. I had to put down my friend of 12 years today also due to cancer. I've been trying to do some cleaning by washing the blankets that were coiled up near my bed, vaccuuming up the hair that seems endless and thowing away the odds and ends. I still have some dog food that I don't know what to do with.
My old friend is gone and it has brought me to my knees.
You were the best Elsa...

Re: Goodbye to Buddy
JJ,
Sorry to hear about loosing Buddy. Having never met Buddy I can't say I know exactly how you feel. But after saying goodbye to my lab 2 months ago, I'm real close. Crabbait said it best, "Grieve as long as you must, then go find a puppy". After saying that I wanted to wait a couple years, I'm already getting the bug to start looking.
Take care,
Steve
