Default which vhf antenna?

I am learning that the five footer (3DB) I bought isn't enough for ocean fishing (Coho/bottomfish). So I am going to take it back and purchase an 8' 6db. What would you guys recommend? My VHF is a Uniden Solara. Also, where would you mount it? I hear they must be 6' away from people, but HTH do you pull that off without ordering everyone to the back of the boat when transmitting or receiving?? This is technical stuff. Thanks again guys.

Shakespeare anttenas work well too. The better ones (Galaxy series) are definetly built more stout. Thicker fiberglass, better internal element.

The real skinny is that the digital antenna brand really is a better built antenna. For the price difference between the two or three less expensive brands, you really ought to go the digital brand.

The Digital 529-W (529-B is black) antenna is the one your after. Price should be about $120 shipped to you.

For everyone else out there that already has another brand, If the antena's fiberglass looks fuzzy or cracked, I would definetly replace it sooner rather than later...
