Those potato guns are alot of fun but they are REALLY dangerous. That size gun will shoot a potato 200-300 yards easy.

Other states have members who are even dumber. These guys thought they would have a better display of their fireworks so went up on top of a fuel storage tank and set them off. Mother nature has a way of gleaning the misfits from the genitic pool. It's tragic someone gets killed or injured while not using the noodle. But that's mother nature for you.

Re: Instant Karma
I have read two accounts of this story. It is my understanding that the 'little darling" had nothing to do with the procurement of the tater gun or the selection of ammo candidates. He was a bystander watching the guys who brought the gun and decided to start their own frog-in-space program.
He decided to look into the gun after a mis-fire and the gun "went off". I have some experience with these things which use a liquid propellant (denatured alcohol works much better than hair spray) and an electric spark for ignition. I have witnessed many many mis-fires and have never seen one "go off" without the addition of a source of ignition (someone pulling the trigger). Hmmmmmmmm........
I just feel sorry that the kid lost his eyes.

Re: Instant Karma
I was thinking the same thing Crabbait. The ones I've used had a manual push-button ignition like what you'd find on a barbeque grill. The gun in the picture looks to use a battery to create an electrical spark. On the type we used, you'd have to blatantly be looking down the barrel and have someone else push the button in order for it to go off.(not likely) Most of our mishaps occured from the taters getting stuck in the barrel and pressure in the fuel area cracks the housing. Actually, now that I think about it, I think we ran out of taters and tried to use apples but they didn't have enough lubrication to get out of the barrel.

Re: Instant Karma
These things are horrible accidents. Kind of hard to pass it off as 'Instant Karma'. (what kind of Karma does a leg hold trapper receive?)
Probably would seem different were it our own "little darling".

Re: Instant Karma
Crabbait you said it, I also have just a little experience with one of those. No details, but like you said I've never seen one just ignite w/ out ignition. In other words someone pullled the trigger!
P.S. maybe they should have just tried to lick the frog instead  !

Re: Instant Karma
Keta,
I am really confused by your stance. Have you become a PETA person?
I am not advocating the mistreatment of any animal but you seem to be saying the kid deserved to be blinded for being cruel to the frog.
So, how do you justify leg hold trapping? How do you justify fishing?
Nothing I have read or seen tells me you absolutely depend on these activities for survival. Yes, I am sure you use everything you kill but please, it seems very inconsintant to imply that kids should be blinded for doing something stupid with a frog yet is ok for you to torture animals with Leg hold traps or drag a trout from the depths of it's world to be suffocated and killed or released injured.
How do you justify your behaviour while wishing blindness on others for thiers?

Re: Instant Karma
This will be the last time I respond to your inane questions.
Harming any animal for entertainment is wrong (killing cats for an example). Harvesting a resource and not wasting it is not wrong.
FOOTHOLD traps, when used in water trapping can and should be set to kill within minutes. On land animals the foot gets numb after a few minutes and doesn't cause pain. I’ve had coyotes and fox curled up and sleeping on a set.
I currently don't trap and I don't think I ever will again. But I don't have a problem with harvesting fur. On the other hand when I see kids on the ditch throwing rocks and shooting BB guns at the ducks and ducklings or catching snakes and torturing them I KNOW this is wrong.
There is a difference between these behaviors that I feel should be obvious to even the most simple minded.

Re: Instant Karma
Wrong!!! My dog's mangled leg from a leg hold trap was not numb. I for one do not buy the misinformation you put forth here and will continue to question it at every opportunity.
Further, if blindness is the recourse you wish on kids doing stupid things, I will not miss you ignoring the tough questions I pose to you.
However I will not stop asking them in order to point out your hypocrisy and use of non truths to back your opinion. (numb my rear!)
One more question, if Instant Karma is the rightful response to a kid going blind from mistreating a frog, might one getting his leg crushed in an accident be Delayed Karma for mistreating animals with leg hold traps? Think about it.......

Re: Instant Karma
No, my injury was the results of momentary stupidity  on my part and working for a company that doesn't care for the safety of its workers
What was your dog doing running loose If you were close enough to your dog to keep in under control you could have released it with only minor bruising If your dog was running in my neighborhood it wouldn't make it to my place before one of the neighbors shot it
No trap, legal in Oregon, will "crush" a dog’s leg. Land sets in most states are required to use traps with offset jaws so they will never come into full contact. Maybe some of my wolf traps would but they have a 1/2" gap in the jaws to prevent this and are too big to be legally used in Oregon.
I've removed traps from my dogs as well as my own fingers and have never seen a broken bone or "crushed leg".
If a bone is broken by the trap jaws the animal can escape. The goal is to grip the foot so as to restrain the animal.

Re: Instant Karma
For one that promised not to respond, you sure are quick to jump to conclusions and imply false accusations.
My dog was running on my property and was caught in a trap set illegaly on my property by an irresponsible "sportsman". Last I heard, it was still legal for my dog to run on my property and to drink from the creek that runs through my property.
I never used the word crushed...... mangled was the word.
So, your injury was from momentary stupidity. Might the kids have had momentary lapse of judgment when harming a frog? If their momentary stupidity justifies blindness I guess they could then say you too got what they deserved. I guess they too could try to pass it off as the inventors of spud guns not beind concerned with the safety of the users......

Re: Instant Karma
"sportsman"?
In my book this trap was set by a poacher, but they didn't kill anything so according to one of your earlier posts this is ok. A bit like fishing when you know you didn't purchase a fishing license, it's only poaching if you catch a fish
Or maybe kids set it and they aren’t responsible for their behavior or had a

Re: Instant Karma
Once again you lose focus of the debate. I never said or even implied that I felt the person that illegally set thier traps on my property deserved blindness, as you implied about the kids and the frog.
Also, please tell us, who said the kids should be not be held responsible for thier actions?
Just like the fishing license argument, you twist the debate to meet your agenda. No one said the kids should not be held responsible. No one said people fishing without a license is 'ok'. If you must keep refering to those false statements, at least show us where they appear in the debate other than from you.
I say that implying blindness is a just reaction to the kids irresponsible behaviour is heartless and extreme. I say taking away a person's hunting and fishing priviledges for three years for forgetting to purchase a license is extreme.
Can we please keep the debate within the confines of reality?
As for your ending 'words', I have no idea what that means.
