Fun for Thursday
I'm older than dirt! (well maybe not quite... I know where there's still a restaurant with tableside jukeboxes)
How old are you?
DIRT TEST
How many do you remember? Start counting.....
1. Blackjack chewing gum
2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored
sugar water
3. Candy cigarettes
4. Soda pop machines that dispensed
bottles
5. Coffee shops with tableside
jukeboxes
6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles
with cardboard stoppers
7. Party lines
8. Newsreels before the movie
9. P. F. Flyers
10. Butch wax
11. Telephone numbers with a word
prefix (Olive-6933)
12. Peashooters
13. Howdy Doody
14. 45 RPM records
15. S&H Green Stamps
16. Hi-fi's
17. Metal ice trays with levers
18. Mimeograph paper
19. Blue flashbulbs
20. Beanie and Cecil
21. Roller skate keys
22. Cork popguns
23. Drive-ins
24. Studebakers
25. Wash tub wringers
If you remembered 0-5 = You're still young
If you remembered 6-10 = You are getting older
If you remembered 11-15 = Don't tell your age
If you remembered 16-25 = You're older than dirt

25 out of 25, PERFICT SCORE
We didn't even have a phone line to the house until I was 6.
One channel of the TV that ran syndicated programming a week late and all 3 networks. Got the TV when I was 11. No great loss on the TV.

Re: Fun for Thursday
Me too, a perfect score! I don't FEEL older than dirt. Does that mean
anything? Maybe that de-Nile isn't just a river? I can still remember
the very first phone number my parents had (a party line) ... Cherry6-1598
... later abbreviated to CH6-1598 and later listed as 246-1598. Progress!
Funny that I can still remember that phone number, but am constantly
forgetting my wifes cell phone number! Must be a short term memory
thing? Too much fun in the '60s and '70s?

CApitol4-7150 and another perfect score.
How about the serials like Jet Jackson ( and his side kick Mudd (with two Ds).
Burma Shave.

Re: Fun for Thursday
Yikes, every one.
How many people remember Gold Bond Stamps? Tried to compete with green stamps, but failed.
How about them little knobs with sexie girlie pictures in them that were bolted on to your steering wheel (if you had a truck, or car if you were a real red-neck).
How about those little wire things screwed on to your fenders to tell how close you are to a curb?

Dang, Crabbait that was my deal - Burma shave.
Ok, how 'bout 27 cent a gallon ethel gasoline. Yes, the service attendant wore a uniform and a cool cap. My dad was always happy to find that price for the old mercury wagon.

Radke, would you be shocked to know that I only removed the curb finders 3 years ago?

Only missed a couple, but since I live in Idaho it doesn't really count. Haven't you seen the sigh at Ontario, "Welcome to Idaho...set your clock back 25 years."

Re: Fun for Thursday
The first McDonalds burgers were $.15. They undercut everybody else's $.19. For awhile, you could get a burger fries and a small coke for $.25.
I remember when my allowance went up to $.35. You could see a movie and have junk food money for that.
The only kids who rode the bus to school had to live three miles or further from school. We were a little less than a mile and felt sorry for the kids that had to ride the bus.

Re: Fun for Thursday
I am compost. However, it was less than 2 decades ago when I found a stash of Blackjack chewing gum. I thought it would be good to try instead of corn for Kokanee bait. I was wrong.

Re: Fun for Thursday
STG,
Close! I grew up on 35th Ave. just off Barbur Blvd. and within walking
distance of Johns Market in Multnomah!
When I was in High School the kids on one side of our street went to Wilson
High School and the kids on the other side went to Jackson High School.
Then there was ME ... I took Rose City Transit (remember them?? )
across town to Central Catholic when it was still an all boys school!!
Cost to ride the bus clear across town: $.15 (that's right, 15 cents!)
Cost to fill my '59 Chevy Bel Air: Less than $5!! Wowsers, THOSE were the days!!

This is WAY too much fun!!

Re: Fun for Thursday
I actually remember 12 of them in my life (which is not the same as having ever heard of them, right?) and I'm 44. Compared to a few of the other people who are younger and remember more I feel a little under cultured! Growing up in Western Colorado and Eastern Montana could have something to do with it though! But I would not trade those places for anything else I've seen since...a great childhood running all over the country side.
