As I told Jen, the alternative is death by suffering.

You two can do it! I know you've heard it all before but it's true, the longer you go without the easier it gets, no cheating. I can remember rationalizing, "Well, I only had one cigarette today so at least that's better than two packs right?" and slowly that one/day turns into four/day, then 8/day, then 2 packs again. You've got to kill it cold turkey.

Put the money you save in the tuna fund, new boat fund, or the new trailer axle fund!

Yaaaay John!

I really, really wanted to share this information because I was so proud that you decided to do this at the same time (knowing full well it was going to be that much harder to have us both grumpy) But I figured you'd share when you were ready.

We are a matched set, Jen and I. I was just embarrassed about my earlier attempts that failed. Thanks for the support, it is appreciated.

Another motivation is TUNA! dollars. At a pack a day or $5 a day ... I could have up to $35 a week in TUNA! dollars.

So I have been buying stuff for fishing as a reward for doing something hard.

Default I quit too ........

Yep, the same day that Jen did. Because she is my dear friend and I wanted to support her effort. It made no sense to me to be a trigger for her when she is working so hard to get shed of a bad habit. It's been almost a week and the headaches and flu symptoms that I always get are gone. I think this is the 4th or 5th time I've quit now. Hopefully it is the last.

No pills, support group or big fanfare. Maybe because this is not my first attempt, I was kind of in the closet. The only motivation that mattered to me was that Jen will live longer and so we will be together longer.

Most people can do anything they are truly motivated to do.

Why is it I can't get motivated to quit? I know what it's doing to me, but every time I see a commercial on TV about a 'stop smoking' aid....I walk out of the room  I quit for 13 weeks about 10 years ago, and was so proud of myself....felt better, and everyone I knew was pleased One day, for an unexplained reason, the thought "wonder what 'one' would do to me?" crept into my head. That was the beginning of the nightmare all over again. Most of the time when I'm with other people, I feel like an outcast...because I sneak out to boost my nicotine level, and feel embarrassed when I return. Wouldn't it be wonderful if just one post I read here would be the motivation I need? I don't know what to tell you lucky - It has to come from within. Some magic light that suddenly pops on. You've thought about it. You've given yourself some good reasons to do it (both driven by positive things and by negative feelings). Now, I think all you need to motivate you is the courage to do it.

Tonight will mark one week. I cautiously call that a success. I won't kid you, there are times when I think, "I don't really want to quit." Then I remind myself that's the spokesperson for the tobacco company that somehow got in my head and stayed there for 25 years.

Get prepared, get determined, feel the fear and do it anyway.

I don't know if you saw the link in the other thread I posted, but there's a smoking cessation study going on right now. Doesn't cost anything (unless you decide to use aids), in fact, they pay you. Check it out. Email me if you want. You can do this if you want to (maybe even if you think you don't)

I try to make a joke out of it, but for sure it's a tough monkey to get off your back. I quit drinking 14 years ago, and found out thatit was fairly easy. I think that to quit smoking, you just have to get the mindset that enough is enough. I have tried the patches and the Zyban and have made it a total of 1 day without a cigarette. I've done it with them still in the house, vehicles etc., and didn't quit. I've done it with none in the area, and then found an old pack in my lunch box that I put on the boat. They were really stout, but I toughed it out and smoked em anyway. Then I tried the cold turkey method and made it three whole days. Was so proud of myself that I bought a pack of cigarettes to celebrate. Haven't quit yet, but will get the notion in that void between my ears one of these days and maybe get the job done. 44 years is a long time to be addicted to anything except fishing. Great to hear that someone is successfully quitting. More encouragement for us hangers on,,,,,,,,,,

The 2 of ya quiting together? I don't know if you are going to live longer you are just going to kill each other sooner!!

Just kidding. I hope the 2 of you the best of luck.

My brother inlaw quit 1 1/2 years ago. He said the first month or 2 was the toughest then after that it got pretty easy. The smell of smoke makes him sick know. I guess he knows how we felt know.

Again best of luck to the both of you. Look at all the TUNA GEAR you can buy with all the money you save.

To all who wish to quit-

My name is Ryley, and I smoked (past tense) for 16 years. (kinda sounds like AA huh)

I have quit 31 days ago with the help of Wellbutrin. It is an antidepressant that my doctor prescribed to me because of the side effect it has on people who are trying to quit smoking.

It litterally makes you forget you are trying to quit. This is for real. I have tried the gum, the patch, and have unsuccessfully quit for three and four weeks numerous times. You know why if you have too. There is always something that comes up... Some little voice in your head or incident that puts you over the edge.

But this time my wife, her mother, and I are all quitting and we are confident that we will succeed.

Go talk to your doctor about Wellbutrin as a smoking cessation technique, you will thank me after you have quit. THIS STUFF REALLY WORKS. Take it from three people who have smoked for 16 and 40 years. We are all done with it and know we are for good, if you want to quit this is the ticket. I still chew about 3 pieces of gum per day. but there are NO CRAVINGS.

The deal is you start taking it about 1 week prior to your quit date. By about the forth day, cigs start tasting like doo-doo. Once you have quit, they medication really helps you forget about it and mitigates those hateful urges to run to the 7-11.

I wont kid you though. You really have to be ready to quit or it won't work. This is just a very effective tool for those who are ready to quit.

Please give it a try.

Boy.....this is good stuff to read...I think I'm getting pumped up, and I figure that's what I need to even give it a try (again). I know the philosophy....I have to want to do it, and I have to want to do it for myself..not someone else. So, ya see......you are all making progress with me!

Keep it up!! I quit chewing tobacco on 4/14. I have chewed for most of 20 years minus 3 years that I quit in the middle of it. Man has it been tough to quit this time.

The reason why I am doing it? As a birthday present to my daughter who turned three on 4/14.

It will be a year in May for me.
Being around others who smoke doesn't bother me.
Lucky, I guess.

I still want to have a cigarette on those occasions and then I remember "oh, I don't smoke"
