Default Best sonar options?

I currently have a Garmin 4212 and am considering the GSD22 sonar unit. Is this my only path other than a separate unit? What integration can be done with other brands or stand alone units?

Is there any functionality that I might be giving up? For example, my GMR18 radar overlays the chartplotter screen. If there are no gains then I might as well keep them separate to keep the main screen clean. I'll be adding a tr-1 gold kicker autopilot this year.

What's good enough and will I really care about it? I have not tried comparing different units enough to know one way or another. Beyond depth, and showing different sizes of returns how much more functionality matters?

All I have now is a couple old Huminbird units including the 3d version.

In my experience, with that 12" screen, you have more than enough room to display your sonar, and your map with radar overlay, at the same time. Garmin also has good options for the soft keys to easily view either of your splits as a full screen, and then return to split screen, with each transition in only one click. Your only gain or loss is space and money, and depends on your point of view. A separate unit for sonar (of at least the quality of a GSD 22 and a good transducer), is going to run you about $1000-1200 (twice as much as adding the sonar to the Garmin), and take up more space on/around the console. That said, something like a Furuno FCV (make sure you get digital sonar!) is a great stand alone sonar unit, in looks and performance.
