Re: pop ups??
Pop ups come from web sites that install cookies or spybot programs on your computer. You can use a program like Spybot Search and Destroy to find and remove them. It won't take care of everything, but it can help.

Re: pop ups??
Deleting all your cookies will affect the sites you do want to visit. For example, if you delete all your cookies, the next time you visit Ifish, it would indicate that you had not read any of the posts. Using a program like Spybot gets rid of cookies selectively, allowing you to choose the ones you don't want. I was really surprised at how many things like "click tracker" and "ad tracker" were on my system. I think there were something like 170 of them.
Short answer, just deleting all your cookies would work until the next time you turned on your browser, but there would also be some unintended consequences you might not like.

Re: pop ups??
thanks Pete! Would it help if I deleted all the cookies from my machine? Would that effect other programs?

Re: pop ups??
Actually, in some cases removing or disabling
a cookie will cause a popup window. On my last
project I patched Mozilla to disable web site content from opening new windows.
We had a browser running on a cable setup box that had very little memory and didn't do to well with crazy websites that open a bunch of new windows. I lost a summer getting that thing to work on all the horrible (invalid) web content out there.
If I recall correctly, Netscape made that same patch to the Netscape Navigator (based on Mozilla) in one of their releases in the last couple of years.
Pardon the geek speak... short answer:
I think the latest Netscape browser has a feature that allows you to disable popup windows in a way that does not disturb how you normally surf the web.

Re: pop ups??
Remember, however, if you disable pop up windows, no more polling for you!
They are pop up windows!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">YOU wrote the Mozilla popup killer? COOL!
There are some things that are beneficial that it stops (see Jennie's comment for an example), but otherwise it's great. If you're going to websites that use a lot of popups (I'm not saying where), then it's a great option.
