Default Spawn Sacks

I am thinking about making some spawn sacks this weekend (there is no fishing here right now and I have spring fever bad ).

So does anyone have any special secrets or helpful tips you are willing to share?

How many of you have fished with spawn sacks made out of Balls-of-Fire or Mike’s eggs? Any special flavor? How do they work?

Does anyone put in a special oil or attractant when storing/jarring up your spawn sacks? Does anyone know what is used in the jars of commercial spawn sacks? Any other tips that someone could recommend to me?

Basically “Givez me zee zecret planz to topple zee evil zalmon with zee zpawn zacks”. <Evil Dr. Laugher follows>

I like to make them on the river in special situations...such as the very fast drift fishing flows as in the Klutina River AK. The addition of puffballs to the sack can be very advantagous too....

I use special fabric from teh craft sotre to and prefer the light purple color...

Come on. Someone has to have some helpful tips regarding spawn sacks. How many of you guys use them and how successful are you with them?

Thanks and have a Great day. Please don't make me bet. The only time I like to do that is for the fish gods to grace me with a trophy.

Scott --- I would love to have a bunch of single eggs. I make up spawn sacs for steelheading. Summers especially love them. E-mail me a time and place and I'm there! Are they cured, salted or "raw"? I'll bring the buckets! Woo-woo.

Make them small, ie size of your thumb nail. You can make them larger, quarter size, even up to golf ball size when fishing in muddy water or for salmon.

Try sprinkling some hobby store silver glitter on the eggs before you tie up the sac. I usually add a little crazy glue to the thread knot and then later use that location to pass my hook point thru when rigging it up.

Finally for about $10 you can get a little "kit" which includes the sac material, thread, and most importantly, a jig that makes it far easier to tie the sacs.

Once made, you can store them just as you would cured roe, ie refrigerate, freeze, etc.

An interesting alternative to roe is to tie up tuna in the sacs, but that is a secret

Good luck

Hey, and I thought I was the only guy who uses them around here!....

The Pautzkes eggs work great in spawnsacks and will last a long time before breaking down.

There are a few ways to rig them, but my favorite is a thumbnail sized bag with some small puff-ball like floatbeads (Mike's) for floatation and color.

Tuck the knotted part into the egg-loop and cinch it down tight. Now you are fishing!

simplest way to fish eggs I've ever found.

You should also tie some up with some eggs like Amerman's....it will make them last quite a bit longer on the hook.

good fishin',
