And Now For Something Completely Different
I ran across the following and it so perfectly sums up why I love fishing Big Blue...
"Fishing gives you a sense of where you fit in the scheme of things - Your place in the universe...I, mean, here I am, one small guy with a fishing pole on this vast beach and out there in the blue expanse of ocean are these hundreds of millions of fish ...laughing at me." Unknown

Re: And Now For Something Completely Different
Amen. One of the reasons that I love fishing on the ocean so much is that it is so vast, so immense that I know my true miniscule place in the universe. I am bait.
The Ocean: She who must be respected at all times.

Crabbait, right on bro. The number one reason to go to sea is to rediscover your true place in the big picture.
Nothing does that better than surrounding yourself with cubic miles of seawater.

Re: And Now For Something Completely Different
Surrounding isn't necessary. I can stand before the ocean at the beach and have it completely put everything into perspective.
The whole experience is awesome. And not in the "totally awesome" definition, either.

Re: And Now For Something Completely Different
'Tis true. The ocean is a living, restless entity that never stays the same - yet never changes, and always refuses to be tamed. Inland, the hills can be clearcut, the lawns can be tended, the streets paved, the rivers dammed, but out on the blue there is untamable strength that seethes and throbs even on calm, flat days. Sometimes I drive all the way to the coast just so I can touch the salt.
And when it's in your soul there is no place that does not bring up a thought of the sea. Stand in a forest of Ponderosa Pines on the east side, and the wind's sound is that of the seacoast. Try it.
I must go down to the sea again,
To the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship,
And a star to steer her by....

Re: And Now For Something Completely Different
A little levity: Aboard ship feeling fairly secure (930+ feet) during a typhoon, the ship was rocking and rolling something fierce. I had to brace a knee in order to stay in front of the head. When I looked down, the water was nearly crawling out one side of the commode, then the other. I had to laugh out loud.
We cannot conquer the water. It is all connected.

Re: And Now For Something Completely Different
A life on the ocean wave,
A home on the rolling deep,
For the spark that nature gave,
I have there the right to keep.
They give me the cat-o'-nine
Whenever I go ashore.
Then ho! for the flashing brine,
I'm a natural commodore!

Re: And Now For Something Completely Different
Skein,
I recited that poem my sophomore year and liked it so much that the next year I recited Robert Frost's "Stopping by woods on a snowy evening."
"Sea Fever"
I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.
I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.
