Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
(NEW GUIDE LINES)
Due to the over whelming amount of e-mails the Challenge has changed a little.
Now you Ifishers in Idaho can play  The Idea here is to get as many Ifishers involved. Think of this as the warm up to the big one, THE SPRINGER CHALLENGE !!
The event is free and it's all in good fun.
2004 Steelhead Challenge back by poplar demand.
Dates: Friday 12 & Saturday 13, March 2004 (Week after the ANWS rodeo)
OK Ifishers, there will be a steelhead Challenge. I know it's short notice but we can make it work. Some might say it's late but I think not! There's plenty of fish to be had.
Guide lines:
1. The Team with the largest Steelhead Wins the challenge, It's important that every team
has a tool to record their entry. Cameras work best, digital or film. It's best to also have a
measuring tool for accuracy. All entries must be logged on the Weigh in post by midnight
3/13/04. The Winning team will be announced on Sunday 14.
2. This will be a two day event, your Team can fish either day or both. Please try and keep the same crew if your fishing both challenge days.
3. Non Ifishers can participate but they must be listed in the Team line up post by
Noon 3/11/04 and there must be at least one registered Ifish member fishing with the
Team the day of.
4. Teams may boat or bank and fish ANY RIVER of choice.
5. There is a 4 member limit per Team, Your Team must choose a captain for thee event of a
baton nomination.
The single heaviest Steelhead WINS, in the event of a tie an Ifish poll will determine the winners.
The winning team will receive Thee 2004 Steelhead Challenge Trophies & 1 guide size bottle of
The teams reeking of skunk will be added to the 2004 Steelhead Challenge baton poll. Ifishers will decide who gets the baton...that works the best.
Now let's hope the weather is on our side.

How many on a team? Can there be a single? Boat or bank? Any cost? Thanks.

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
Finnman,
1. How big of a team to you have? usually it's 5 and under but if your have team brady bunch, I don't see any problem with that.
2.Yes
3.Your Choice
4.Free
Smoky,
You bring up a good point.
Fishing with diver and bait
There will be a plenty of Natives in the systems so I hope everyone thinks about that when fishing the Challenge, although It's not forbidden, it is highly advised against. Ifishers know better If not Smoky will be out there with the wood shampoo

About an hour and a half from downtown Portland.

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
What are the chances of changing this event to not exclude half of the board. I know what you have set up is a really good idea but not everybody that wants to compete in this event live within a reasonable driving distance. What about something like pictures and getting fish weighed by somebody else and signed like Jenny does for the springer contest. I just feel like this is turning out to be an exclusive contest between a few member that live in or around the portland area. Just a thought.

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
Bummer... One its located about 2 hours from me and #2 it's on Saturday the worst day for me to get off.. Being a sales manager at Dick Hannah it's impossible to get weekends off (except 2 a year when I vacation) then on top of that the 13th is the girlfriends B-day...
Looks like I won't get to come and take the trophy...

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
thefishnfool,
Last years event turned out OK but there were so many teams that forgot cameras, didn't follow this rule and that rule.....you know where this is going. This Steelhead challenge is a one day event with one weigh in area. Every fish entered will be photographed. I hate making the 4 hour drive but it's fishing so I can justify it
I hope you can make it...the trophy looks pretty cool
Bruce, 2nd place is a beautiful set of clappy hands, they look like this
Keith,
Looks like we have the same drive...take your girl fishing for her birthday. I was looking forward to a meeting

If anyone doesn't like the rules then don't play. There was plenty of opportunity to take the bull by the horns and do this. B+B took the initiative. I am humbled and appreciative of his efforts.
If you want to do something proactive then it's time for the Springer event to be organized!

I'll drive forever for some fun competition but it's getting the day off that's the problem. I don't even have the day off for the girlfriends B-day, it sorta sucks. I too was looking forward to a little fun competition.
But.... Anytime wed/thurs during the week that the Carrot Clan want's to make a little challenge let me know, and you can pick the river... I've got a sled and a drift boat and can travel...

Sorry B&B-
Wasn't trying to add any negativity to the thread. It was just an idea. Apparently most took it the wrong way. What you have done is a great thing. Hope everybody has a good time. I will be on Spring Break then so if the rivers up north are out maybe I'll drive down that way and see whats kicken.

I'm glad there is a S.C. this year. I was really hoping to get rid of the "unoffical" in front of the winner this year, but the eight hour drive is about five hours too long. Good luck to all who make it.

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
Perhaps after this one we'll put another together that is during the week and is for those that want to fish anywhere and have 3-4 weigh in spots. But for now this one is a good idea and will concentrate on those that have weekends off and can fish the north coast area of oregon...
All in all it looks like it will be fun for those that can make it... I'm jealous...

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
I would be in on this but its a 4 hour drive from the river Im fishing that weekend.
If the rule about the wiegh in being at Sollie I
would do it.
And the part about having to kill a fish to get it to count is kinda bunk also. As well as just hatchery fish counting towards the score.
I guess what Im trying to say is The Challenge is geared more towards you guys up north that want to live on the Wilson river. By haviong the wiegh in at the Sollie ramp keeps the people who want to fish the Clackamas from competeing.
here is an Idea Call it the Wilson river brat bloodfest. Then schedule another true Steelhead Challenge thats open for every river in the state and the total combined length of all the fish wild and hatchery. Hold it the same weekend. Make everyone get pictures of thier fish being taped. Give those guys a week to get the totals and confirming pictures posted......... Just an Idea. Oh yeah, this will also help me take the win!

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
Willie-
I see the point your trying to make.. I don't know that much about the wilson but nearly every river that I know of have 80% dark hatchery steelhead by now, unless you are up on the OP.. Don't know what they all plan to do with the meat other than early garden fertilizer...

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
There are no rules about starting a challenge if anybody out there wants to take the time to set it up. If you want to set up a midweek contest in SW Washington taking pictures of released nate’s feel free to put it on as there isn’t anything stopping you.
I for one welcome Bobby's and Terry's idea as it gives those who wish to compete some set rules and is more like a real derby and less like a picture posting contest. This lets us meet some new people and have a clear winner. Cant please everybody and this is set up the way they want it. Bottom line is that if you want to join in the fun then join if it’s not your cup of tea and you want something else then step up and make it happened.
My .02 cents
Boe

Re: Official 2004 Steelhead Challenge (REVISED)
Again Ditto to what Willie said..
First, the date just doesn't match up to what I can make personally.. The competition isn't designed around me but for all to get together and have fun.. All in all I think it's a great idea. I'd go if I could make it so I could put faces behind a lot of these names...
Second, I must add that I'm a little more excited getting out on a day there are many chrome fish around (other than nates)... It's just a little slow right now for the chrome hatchery fish, but there still are a few.. I got one last week out of a local river but also c & r'd 3 spawners... I don't care to put the wood to them fish, all my friends and family would look at me wierd bringing over light colored meat and green skin as I've always supplied them with chromers in the past and I'd rather leave the fish in the river than bury them for fertilizier...
It's too bad you can't rely on pictures but with todays technology you'd have some underachiever try to cheat his way to the top.
Do your competition as there are many of months and years we can schedule more of them, and no I don't prefer to schedule them on nates unless it was a picture competition... But as I said before you'll have some jerks posting last years pics... It's like a golf tournament, if you don't have a individual at every hole to count peoples score they will cheat for recognition rather than playing for fun...
Its like anything in life you post enough success and people will follow.. Perhaps someday the Carrot Clan will look for a ride with me
