Difference between OR and WA?
Besides the obvious differences....such as Oregon has income tax, Washington doesn't and Washington has sales tax, Oregon doesn't....what other differences between the two states are there?
One thing I've noticed over the years is there's significantly more roadside and streamside litter in Washington  than in Oregon.
Oregon has better weather than WA.
Both states have bad drivers.
Anyone else?

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
WA is grey, OR is green.
OR has an entire coastline owned by the public, WA doesn't.
We both have National Parks, one-day trips to the most diverse lanscape that can be, and people who love it all.

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
Washington has way too many people (so does Oregon, but not near as many as WA).
Eastern Oregon is largely uninhabited, whereas eastern WA is dotted with farms and small towns.
WA has the Seahawks-
They also have Bill Gates and Paul Allen.

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
Oregon has better wild fish management. Washington has more hatchery fish, cheaper license and tags and more liberal bag limits. You get 4 salmon tags with your license in Wahington and each one have 26 punches if I remember right. Steelhead tag is separate.
Washington has a razor clam tag and management, Oregon should!

fisherdan: Don't you live in "Warshington"? I've heard it called that by people that live there. At least the people in Oregon can pronounce their own states name.

Listen to an east coast newscaster pronounce Orygon, heck it bugs me and i dont even live there. Say George Warshington 5 times really fast.Ive heard some people put the r in there too, i guess there not very good spellers.

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
Washington?
We have the Puget Sound. Many hundreds of miles more shoreline. Olympic Peninsula rivers. San Juan Islands. A foreign country for our other neighbor and it's cheaper to shop there than Oregon. We even let Oregonians fish here at a reasonable rate. We have more clams, crabs, oysters and shrimp available for recreational harvest too.
Oregon: Rest stop for Washingtonians driving to the Redwoods, Yosemite and Disneyland on vacation.

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
Well, I can't agree with you on that one! Oregon had just as large Razor's as Warshington last year and open all year in some places and most of the year in others. But I think that is a mistake! Pretty soon they will be fished out again due to the liberal seasons and lack of mgmt. Some say that's why we suposedly have the red tide to keep them from being over harvested, but I don't believe it.
One thing I think we do better is not to require any license for crabbing! Great for local and out of state tourist. But I like the Washington law that states it is illegal to keep soft crabs should be implemented here also.

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
YEAH!!!!!!!! for Washington!! We lived in Oregon for the first 10 years we were married, then moved to glorious Washington......never had the desire to go back, not even to shop. When we lived in PDX, we did the majority of our fishing in Washington, anyway......now we don't drive so far. It's amazing how many "Oregon" people own property or vacation homes at Silver Lake. Guess they'd rather recreate here instead of their home state? I'm not suggesting one State is better than the other....they're both in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and you can't beat that!!

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
Aunty M - We have a foreign country for a neighbor, too...its called California.
Oregon has about 3 million residents and 97,000 sq.mi. of area...or about 31 people/sq.mi.
Warshington has about 7 million residents and 68,000 sq.mi. of area...or about 103 people/sq.mi.
Approximately 55% of Oregon is public land...about 53,000 sq.mi.
Approximately 29% of Warshington is public land...about 20,000 sq.mi.
So, Oregon is 50% larger, has less than half the population (that's a good thing ), and has almost 3 times as much public land as Warshington.
Oregon has Mountain quail, Warshington doesn't.
Oregon has pronghorn antelope, Warshington doesn't.
Oregon has abalone, Warshington doesn't.
In Oregon you can sit on your fat rear end at the gas station while somebody else puts the gas in your car. In Warshington you have to do it yourself and usually pay more per gallon than in Oregon .
On the other hand, Washington has the Huskies! and Oregon doesn't.

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
GSA, A good friend of mine thought visiting Oregon with his motorhome was a good idea. Up until some dip wad filled his tank full of diesel.... and it has a gas motor.
Sometimes sitting on your fat backside has a price.
As far as gas prices being cheaper.... I would rather pay a higher gas tax and a sales tax than a state income tax. Who's state has the biggest budget crisis?
Yeah, you have lots of public land down there. But I would rather live "with' nature than to just visit it.
Try buying 5 acres within commute distance to your work, surrounded by saltwater with a boat launch nearby and no neighbors within 1/4 mile radius. And my county is STILL not in compliance with the growth management act.

You don't have to get a lobotomy in Oregon to get a drivers license like you do in Washington. And they don't disconnect your turning signals either.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">RH - If you do a little homework it is relatively easy to find out who owns what...USFS and BLM offices sell very good maps that show public land holdings. And SE Oregon's miles & miles of nothing but miles & miles of sagebrush are just that...precious...and I advise you never to go over there.

Hey Leroy - Its in Skamania County which borders Oregon...so its only one county over.
But you're right...I've noticed a definete megalomaniacal tendency in many Oregonian's attitudes...I think it probably goes back to the time when present-day Oregon along with all of Washington, Idaho, western Montana and NW Wyoming comprised the Oregon Territory.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">You are correct, it is in Skamania county. I thought it was Lewis county. It is very close to the border of the two, and curiously, Skamania county is almost as big as Clark and Cowlitz county combined. Either way, it's a lot closer to Washington than Oregons border.

Washington has Hanford, home of a lot of nasty radioactive stuff.
Oregon has the Umatilla Army Depot, home of a lot of nasty nerve agent stuff.
Its funny, the Hanford site is the only reason the Reach spawning grounds were not submerged by a dam so maybee its not such a bad thing after all.

WA Hunter - Yup, you're right...I once saw a mtn quail on the Wahkiakum/Cowlitz Co. line on the hill above the river. But I worked in the woods in WA for years (southwest and in the Entiat area) and never saw any other mtn quail.
Three critters that are found in WA but not in OR are grizzly bears, woodland caribou and ptarmigan (as far south as MtStHelens).

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
There are oodles of mountain quail in my Bellevue neighborhood. Granted, my neighbors get a little twitchy if I break out the shotgun.
Oregon has had the benefits of way better planning. When I moved up here, I realized that when I drove around the portland area, you could almost feel where the gas stations and stores would be. Up here, development has been much more haphazard, with negative impacts on neighborhoods and traffic.
And if you think traffic on highway 26 is bad, PAH! When I lived down there I was on a neighborhood committee. A city traffic engineer came to speak to us, and told us that Portland's goal was imply to not have their traffic get as bad as Seattle's. Now I know what he meant, and traffic has gotten noticeably worse since we moved here.
I prefer Portland to Seattle for liveability. However, our schools are way better currently, and that ties us to this town for the foreseeable future.

Re: Difference between OR and WA?
Could well be, I don't have one in front of me right now. I just looked at my trusty Audobon's, and the birds here could be either bird. I can't remember whether the topknot curls over or not. Have to look more carefully when they come hit the feeder next time. Audobons shows this as being in their territory, however. The groups that I see are the right size, 4 to 8 birds.

Maybe you're right...the book shows their native range once extended into the south sound region...but I bet you are seeing California quail (an introduced species in WA). Mountain quail are bluish/brown birds with straight topknots usually in small coveys of 6 to 8...Calif quail are more colorful, smaller, have "hockey stick" topknots and have larger coveys & winter groups. I lived in WA for 27 years and hunted & fished all over the place....only saw the one mtn quail in all that time.
