I just got back today from a couple single day floats out of Spray. The fishing was slow. I was fly fishing and small poppers, yellow and/or black worked the best. Wooly buggers, marabou muddlers and rubber tailed flies worked deep. Even the gear fishermen were not catching them in numbers. I've only been there twice but when the water was a little lower and the weather was hotter later in the summer you'd lose count of the fish. It's beautiful out there and fun even to catch a few.

By John Day Arm I take it you mean where it empties into the Columbia? I usually fish mostly for cats up there but do a little bassin too. I just stay fairly close to shore and cast auger tail jigs to shore and drag them back. I bet other guys have better ideas. I was there last week and the wind murdered me but was fishing for cats and got a bass on a shrimp with crawdad scent on it bottom fishing. Suprized me!

I also went to Rufus, just befor the John Day Arm and went down river aways and caught a bunch of bass on every thing I threw at them; that was last year. Get off at Rufus and turn to go north. Go under the freeway and turn right (east) and the boat ramp is right down there.
