Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
I voted yes, but with conditions.
I will fight to help protect the others who fight. I think Id go into it with a "defensive" mindset.
The cause is obvious, yet I feel like war was premature. Now that it has started, I would join today if I was eligible, not for freedom, not for democracy, not for fair oil prices...but to help all the moms and dads, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters who are there now.

Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
The thought has crossed my mind many times. Yes I would go if I weren't too old and out of shape. Wouldn't require a recruiter to talk me into it. It's not that I would be interested in killing anybody, but can't stand the thought of what those animals are doing to innocent civilians.

Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
To be honest, no, I would not. We have a military for that...so I would instead stay home (as I am doing), work at my job, spend time with my wife, and work on building a family. I'll leave the military work to the professionals.

If they had a place for a 42 year old Electrician with no militery background, I would be there in a heartbeat. Especially if I could serve in place of my sons, if there were to be a draft.

A qualified Yes....yes if I could be aircraft commander on an AC-130 Spectre gunship...a lt. colonel, at least....and only if I could change my mind and come home whenever I wanted to........isn't that how the military works?

Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
A qualified yes. If I was in the military, I would go (obviously). However, I also would have held off starting a family until I was out. I couldn't bear leaving my family to go fight, and I feel for all those who have done it.
That said, it's awfully easy for all of us here to say we would go....we'll never really know (hopefully anyway).

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">Fiesty,
Last I heard it was a very good possibility that it was an Iraqi missile that came back down and hit the market or the regime did it intenionally to stir anti-American resentment. Appears you bought into it. I heard there was no crater that would have been left by one of our bombs or cruise missiles.
There is going to be collateral damage and even the Iraqi civilians realize we are trying our best to avoid it and there are going to be a lot less civilians killed in this war than by Saddam if we left him in control. A lot of Iraqi's want us there ousting Saddam.
Fortunately your radical views are not shared by the majority. Not even close.

Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
HUMOR wrote for Afgan.
WE'LL FIGHT TO THE LAST 50-YEAR-OLD!
By: Jeff Ackerman
A couple of weeks ago I indicated that if I could, I'd enlist today
and help my country track down those responsible for killing thousands of
innocent people in New York City and Washington, D.C. But I'm 50 now and the Armed Forces says I'm too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 35 to join the Army.
They've got the whole thing backwards. Instead of sending 18-year-olds
off to the fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to
join until you're at least 35-years-old. For starters: Researchers say
18-year-olds think about sex every 10-seconds. Old guys think about sex
every 15-seconds, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.
Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky and grumpy. A
cranky and grumpy soldier is a dangerous soldier. If we can't kill the enemy we'll complain them into submission or surrender. "My back hurts!" "I'm hungry!" "Where's the remote control?"
An 18-year-old hasn't had a legal bottle of beer yet, and you shouldn't
go to war until you're at least old enough to legally drink beer. An
average old guy, on the other hand, has probably consumed at least
126,000 gallons of beer by the time he's 35, and a jaunt through the desert heat with a backpack on and an M-60 over your shoulder would do wonders for a beer belly.
An 18-year-old doesn't like to get up before 10 a.m. Old guys get
up early just to show we can [and to steal the neighbors newspaper.] If
old guys got captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd probably
forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank and serial number would be a real brain teaser. If it wasn't for the age barrier, I'd pretty much be able
to get into the Army without a hitch.
According to the Army Internet site, I'd need to pass an entrance exam [officially called an ASVAB], but the simple questions I saw weren't
exactly headache material. Boot Camp would actually be easier for old
guys. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at, and we actually like
soft food. We've also developed a deep appreciation for guns and rifles. We like them almost better than naps.
The Army could lighten up on the obstacle course, however. I've been
to the desert and didn't see a single 20-foot wall with a rope hanging over
the side. I can hear the Drill Sergeant now. "Get down and give
me.....er.....one!" And the running part seems to be a hell of a waste
of good energy. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.
I'm reminded of the story of the young bull and the old bull
standing on a hill looking down at the cows. "Let's run down there and make love to one of those cows," says the young bull. "How about we WALK down there and make love to ALL those cows," replies the old bull.
Patience is something most 18-year-olds simply do not have. For good
reason too. An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still
learning to shave. To actually carry on a conversation. To learn that a
pierced tongue catches food particles. And that a 200-watt speaker in
the back seat of a Honda Accord can rupture an eardrum. All great reasons to keep our sons at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off to a possible death.
Let us old guys track down those dirty, rotten, filthy, cowards who
attacked our country three weeks ago today. The last thing they'd want
to see right now would be a couple of million old guys with attitudes

Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
I would not want to suffer like I did in the Vietnam war but would go if asked. Thank God I'm not young enough today but would appreciate the ability to do the job I was trained for in 1966. And instead of being forced to check the rules of engagement everytime we were fired on, being allowed to do the job like our troops today. Those like Fiesty who are always on the side of the enemy make me sick. If they know the history of why we were in Vietnam and why the Democratic controlled Presidency and Congress would not let us win and end the war quickly, they wouldn't spout off with their silly statements. Study your history Fiesty and learn the facts. Study the pictures of the blast in the market place and you could plainly see it was not a bomb dropped by a plane or missle. The damage was too slight. The device that went off in that market place was a high concussion wire fragmentary weapon. Exactly like the anti aircraft missils designed by the Soviet Union and used by Iraq. You are a radical who shoots off at the mouth without knowing the facts. And if you think that damage in the market place was severe, you obviously have no military experience. If you are so opposed to America and the ideals of our country, why do you live here? You obviously have not seen much of the world because if you have, you would know that this is the greatest country on Earth with the best oppertunities for all. Granted we have problems and granted there will be those who abuse the system and yes, even some who will lie. But that doen't make everyone in government a low life. To catergoricly say our government is lying about everything just shows how unbalanced the ridicle element in our society is. I love my country and I will defend it but I also know there are some bad elements in our country. But I believe the majority of our people are striving to do the right thing.

Look at our history, for crying out loud! We have a great history of messing over other people, both at home and abroad.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">We also have a MUCH greater history of nation rebuilding, helping 3rnd world countries, humanitarian aid...etc etc. In many cases our military had at least some part in the facilitation of these efforts. I hate to think what type of world it would be if our country did not take part in actions like this.

Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
In the gulf war yes!
In this one no way.
Did you know the WW2 generation has the highest percentage of people against this war today. Thats acording to one of those unscientific polls they do on the news.
I guess they are not blind to the false bush motives here. We could even pay for this thing if he lifted the off shore corp tax Shelters. That will never happen. All those corparations need tax cuts still though.
Real patriots pay there Taxes.

Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
Did this have to turn political? So predictable.
Me? thankful I would only have to choose a gun rather than a corp of troops to die at my command..thankful none of you would do anything more than ask my opinion, .........oops, return fire there too!
My heartfelt respect goes out to all vets, no matter when, where, how or why.
None of us can EVER put ourselves in their shoes, even hypothetically.

Albacore Tuna Captain:
My father read your post, as he cruises this board every now and again. All he has to say is:

As for me Absolutely yes! I have two friends in Iraq right now. They're with the 1st marine expeditionary division. I'd give anything to be over there helping America.

P.S. Fiesty, I respect the fact that you will stand behind your convictions. We don't all have to agree. I'd hate it if we did!

Re: Would you fight in Iraq if you had the opportunity.
The question should also be asked "Have you been there before?" Do you know of what you speak?
Some of us older generation have been there. We have zipped our friends into a body bag.
War is not fun and games but at times it is something that must be taken care of.
I have served in an ugly rotten war. I would do it again if need be. We don't have to like war but we should be supporting our country and it's leaders.

Well. That got a little personal there for awhile! People calling each other names and disrespecting each other. It took awhile to clean it up and delete all those angry posts.
Don't worry. I saved copies of the whole nasty little bickerfest so that those involved can be reminded of the ifish rules.
You will treat each other with respect whether or not you agree with each other and you will not call each other names or your posts will be deleted and we will discuss whether or not you want to continue on ifish. Clear?
