Ifish outage
...pulling hair out, one by one....
Someone on another VPS server had a script crash, and it took ifish down with it.
I don't like Virtual Private Servers, and we are moving again soon.

Re: Ifish outage
Jen.... what I know about servers and computers, you could put in a thimble.
I think I'm speaking for lots of us on Ifish when I say... What works for you, works for us!

Re: Ifish outage
When I was little, I never recall thinking....
"Ah... When I grow up, I want to know all about Servers, and computers, and scripts!"
Nope, never did. Still don't care much about that stuff... AT ALL! But, I am learning, nonetheless, because I have to. :depressed:
I just got a quote for what we need in a server... It's over 700 a month!!! Holy cow!
As you probably are aware, I won't do that. Period!
I found another solution that's about half that price. We'll be moving next week... It was custom built for ifish.
The best part is... Hopefully, if all goes well, you won't even notice the move! We are just going to notice much faster posting times! WHEEEEEE!!!!
I'm really stressed out with all of these hassles. It's been really tough shopping for something you don't know a whole lot about, but I have had good help and have been given solid advice. I decided I'd rather pay for good advice, then put ifish through test after test after test.
The only thing I can liken it to, is when I bought a digital camera. I didn't have a clue what all the possibilities were, and what the lingo was. Slowly, I learned.
So, this server thing is like that, except about 100 times harder for me.
Here is what ifish will be running:
Dedicated Server
(RedHat Linux OS)
*Intel P4 2.0Ghz CPU
*512MB DDR RAM
*18.2GB SCSI HDD, 10,000RPM
*200GB of monthly data transfer
..and nightly backups.
I want to go 10,000 RPMS and get this overwith so I can fish too!

Re: Ifish outage
Yip, lots of desktops are even faster.
Key to running ifish is memory, fully dedicated to ifish, and... the monthly transfer...
Somehow I don't think your desktop needs 200GB of monthly data transfer.
Thaz alot of transfer, dude!

Re: Ifish outage
hmm my company pays 742 a month for a dedicated full T1 line.
512 megs of ram is not very much anymore. have them put in another stick of 512
What kind of internet connection does the server have? Does it share a T1 with all there other rented servers?
i guess your paying for the nightly backups / tech support.

Re: Ifish outage
Nope, I do my own nightly transfers...
Well, my sysadmin does. I always like to have my own copy, in case there is a real problem.
They did offer to do nightly backups, though.
The 512, fully dedicated to ifish is sufficient.

Re: Ifish outage
Hardware-wise, that should be more than plenty to run iFish. It doesn't take much hardware to run a dedicated Linux/Apache install, that's for sure. Issues come up when it becomes a shared server, as then you are at the mercy of some other monkey dorking around on his scripts on his site and one starts to get away from him and redlines the CPU.
Personally I just threw a couple 256 meg DIMMs into my machine last weekend. Thirty seven bucks each was too much of a temptation for me to handle. Installed Mandrake 9.1 on Tuesday...sweeeeeeeeeeet.

Re: Ifish outage
