Jennie,

Just so you know...from the outside it looks and works fine.

I was dialing in from CA last week. Back on the cable this week. Both seemed to work fine.

Ifish was down from about 7:40 to 8:20 PM this evening. If it was not down for you during that period, please contact Jennie.

Couldn't tracert, couldn't ping.... couldn't ftp.

Then, I wrote to customer service. 50 minutes later it came up again, and then I immediately got this e mail:

It was down, period. If they're telling you it wasn't, I'd jump ship as fast as I could and find a real ISP. They obviously haven't a clue.

Jennie I am sure there are others who can back me up on this. I used to sell enterprise class IT service management software(gotta love unemployment in the tech sector ). A big part of this is service management. A web service (as I am sure you know) is comprised of a bunch of other smaller services that all have to be working to make the page come up.

ANY hosting ISP should offer a service that outlines DNS lookup times, page load times, etc for a hosted site(They should also include hardware performance profiles against this service data). This will often be thrown in with Service Level Agreement (SLA) types of contracts. These can be good, but often times they are poorly designed and are basically running against the web site on THIER LAN.

There are some decent packages out there (some even free) that can enable you to verify the service that an ISP is offering you. (we used to sell this to large companies so they could hammer thier ISPs for over billing/under delivering on network and service contracts.)

If you received a SLA from the ISP, email me a copy if you can, and I will take a look at it. If they didn't, ask for one and see what they say. A good ISP will offer SLA's that extend out to most of the internet backbones. They will have "probes" running HTTP gets and DNS lookups against your site from several locations outside of thier network.

This is something else to consider if you are looking for a new ISP. Let me know if you want my .02 on what to look for/ask.

Good luck and thanks again for all your hardwork.

Yeah, Jen, we were down, and Lured In nailed it. Sounds like he's got the experience and knows what is needed.

You're working awfully hard on this and other issues, but the truth is we're doing okay (other than the outage which wasn't your fault). Take a deep breath and relax for a while. We can live with the current configuration and REALLY don't want you to burn out.

I know you want it to be perfect, but we're doing okay. Tell Bill you want a backrub and a steelhead, not necessarily in that order.
