quicksand
Folks, I beleive that the presant administration has gotten the American nation into another quicksand situation, the more you struggle in it,the deeper you get bogged down in it, that is part of Soddoms strategy, we are leaving the enemy behind us, around us, in our push for Bagdad...God help our troops. I too am a Vet, I serveds during Vietnam, but I predict, with a certainty, that we are about to suffer a worse defeat than Vietnam...our "superior" technology is not going to tip the scales...they are bringing down multi-million dollar helicopters with old bolt-action rifles

Re: quicksand
First of all we did not get defeated in the Vietnam war. Our leaders chose a strategy which kept our military from winning that war. We pulled out and the corrupt S. Vietnamese regime fell to the communists...simple as that.
Secondly do you really believe that the Apache helicopter was brought down by a single bullet like the Iraqis are reporting?
Right or wrong America will not stand for another quagmire like Vietnam.
You veterans that served over there should be commended for doing your job and following orders. You Vietnam vets got a raw deal.

Thnx for the courteous reply, any helicopter can be brought down with a few bullets through the tail rotor

Re: quicksand
I had similar thoughts this morning. It seems that Hussein is adopting viet cong tactics - use of ununiformed irregulars to create suspicion of civilians by our forces. That creates the risk of further alienating the civilian population if some poor Joe makes a mistake and pops a genuine civilian.
He is, unfortunately, a very smart, evil man. He's not fighting a war, he's running a PR campaign.

Re: quicksand
SH is right. Despite Saddam's history of gross miscalculation, he is not stupid. He knows the only way he (and his regime) can survive is to force the US and British into a long, protracted guerilla war so the public and the politicians will lose their will, cut their losses and pull out. If he gets away with it, we have only ourselves (and the media) to blame.
Stew, The comparisons to Vietnam are unfair, but inevitable.
If you're going to wage a limited war with self-imposed rules and restraints, you'd better be ready to pull out all the stops if the other side doesn't care about the ROE, civilian casualties, the Geneva convention, and is willing to use WMD.
Our political leaders in the Vietnam era were not willing to cross that line, and we all know the result. GW has made it clear that we won't back away from this one. The only thing I know is that it's going to get even uglier.

Re: quicksand
Keep your chins up, we are doing well in Iraq. The casualties are extremely light compared to other wars. I have complete faith in our military. If it werent for the cowardly fake surrender/ambush the casualty rate would be miraculously low compared to the resistance. The citizens of Basrah are turning on the Baath party forces, maybe the citizens realize that this time we wont desert them to be slaughtered like the last war in Iraq.My .02 cents.
