It makes you wonder what it will all look like 50 years from now. Same problems? Different allies? He makes a good point and makes me think. Thanks for the thread, Otolith!

Re: Great read on American foreign policy...
I don't readily disagree with anything in the article. But, I am also not privy to many of the other issues that may be present under such a proposition.
I do; however, firmly believe that this guy may be onto something. Is it easier said than done, though? Who knows.

Great perspective. A former ambassdor last week (forgot who or where) stated Bushes biggest mistake was going back to un for another resolution after the one last fall.

I have always liked the National Review, for thinking such as this. Sometimes they get a little wrapped up in the party line, but it is usually just NICE to read intelligent conservative thinking. William F. Buckley is on my list of one of the people one should always listen to, even if you're not in agreement.

Re: Great read on American foreign policy...
Well thought out. I liked it. With a switch in US posturing, you may see a day when Turkey is willing to pay us 40 billion dollars to station troops on their soil.
I wonder if the US over estimates it's need to pander itself to foreign nations, simply to benefit from the global economy. With regard to concerns about our economic seperation from Great Britain, Thomas Paine wrote, " America will always enjoy an economy of lucrative trade, as long as eating is still a habit in europe. " (paraphrased} Applied to today; maybe we should deal from a positon of strength rather than payoffs in the global marketplace.
Call in all of our markers and troops. I believe American wheat is THE staple of Eastern Europe and American Consumerism is THE staple of the world economy.

Re: Great read on American foreign policy...
This is very interesting.
I've been so annoyed by Speyfly's opinions posted on this forum the last few weeks that I have wanted to reach into my monitor and ring his neck.
And here we are, two (or probably more) people with polar opposite political views, and we agree on a foreign policy stance. Is this a sign that the ideas presented in this article are EXACTLY what this country needs, and what would galvanize the vast majority of Americans, left and right, behind their government?
I wish there was a way we could put that article in front of GWB and Condie's faces and tell them to follow it like a recipe for re-election.

The obstructionism of Germany and France and the fickleness of Turkey are no longer mere irritants, but may well result in strengthening the resistance of our enemy Saddam Hussein and thus lead to unnecessary American deaths.

We are well beyond the nuances of debate and chic sophistry; the drama now hinges on to what degree a NATO ally's behavior will increase the number of Americans killed in action. France, remember, did not reluctantly vote against the United States, but actively sent its diplomats throughout Africa and Asia to lobby countries to oppose America, a visceral hostility not matched by either Russia or China — or even any of the Arab League.

Just like here in our country where the protesters are pacified while the soldiers die.

I wonder what the "popular" beliefs about a "war" would be among the left wing extremists such as Glover, Streisand, Feinstein, Boxer, Baldwin, the "Dipsy" Chicks, etcetera if that "nuke" made it to Hollywood? I am pretty sure that had the terrorists hit California instead of New York they would have shut their mouths for at least a month
The article is right on and I have felt the same way about foreign policy for many years.
