Default Amber Alert(s)

I like to do good things on ifish.

However, when the amber alert was posted on the main fishing forum, I got a couple of messages from folks to move it to Life in General. That it wasn't really fishing related.

I have a hard time with this subject. I get pleas from people quite often about important issues that should be seen.

Ifish is a fishing forum, devoted to making fishing better.

However, I don't want to be cold hearted. I know this is very important... But there are so many, many important issues!

What should we do? Should Ifish become an amber alert member and post these on the main board?

My inclination is no. But then, I do really, really care for these children, and of course I want to do the right thing.

If I allow this, though, might I need to say OK to every important need that should be broadcast?

It's a tough decision.

Most everything on ifish today has to do with membership, fishing, supporting the guides and sponsors, and ... well... Fishing.

There are several facets that some people don't understand, that are important, if not vital, to the success and operation of ifish. These include occasional moral boosts for sponsors and members, updates on what is happening behind the scenes, (ie, the current new host, etc) and messages that benefit, or are pertinent to members, so that we may communicate better.

Anyway, what is your opinion on the Amber Alert?

I vote no... Only because ifish is fishing, and I can't have all important news releases out, or it would not be fishing anymore.

Agree? Disagree? Im certainly all ears.

Jen

Jen, I think it is fine right here or even on your home page. I don't think it is necessary to put it in the fishing venue with one exception. If it happens to be a member of this board that is a victim of a kidnapping crime. Then maybe a little latitude would certainly be justified.

Thanks for caring.

I think Amber Alerts would be a good thing in LIG.
With as many people that read this board and are on the roads and rivers as much as we are I think it would be a good thing. I know there has to be a limit on posting "important info", I just believe this is very important.

:depressed:
I knew there was an Amber Alert today because
I just happen to have the TV on. I drove to GI Joes and no where did I pass any sign that told me there was a current Amber Alert. If I check out Ifish, I might run across an alert that someone had posted that I wouldn't otherwise know about and if it ends up on the main page, who could be so selfish to gripe that it is on the fishing page. More time and space is wasted whether it should or shouldn't be on a particular board. If it makes just one more person alert to these tragedies, then it was worth it. Obvious there are hundreds of people who having been moving around in Salt Lake and wherever else that poor girl has been who haven't taken a second to ask about what have must have been some odd sightings.
Maybe we need to become more observant and curious. Skip over the threads you don't want to read.

Those who are sitting in front of the computer aren't likely to see an Amber Alert subject drive through the den. Media outlets, especially radio, are the best tools.

LIG is fine by me.

If it dosen't create an excessive added workload, I think it would be a great public service opportunity.

Posh, the point is well taken.

But this is a fishing board.

There are SO many things that need our attention, where do I draw the line? Pretty soon, it will could become a charity board, and fishing would be at the bottom of the list.

So, say I do this... Then someone with cancer comes along, that needs everyone's help, then someone who is searching for their Mother, then, someone whose house burned down, then...

You get my point. Where do I draw the line?

Help me out here. It's not a matter of being selfish, it's a matter of knowing where to draw the line.

My only comment Jen...
I did not say or imply that you were selfish.
However, people who would complain about a AA are.
I do not see an alert as a charity case. And if I don't want to read, skip over it..no matter where the placement is.

Honestly??

An "Amber Alert" has been defined by the authorities to be a high-risk, take-action-immediately thing. I would like to see any official AA placed on the LIG, Fishing, and Hunting boards all at the same time, and left there until the alert is recalled by the authorities. To me, it is such an important thing that it is worth doing.

You're right, it opens up the whole "can 'o worms" for people wanting charity events, cancer fund raisers, etc. And that is something that you, Jen, would have to deal with. I could go for something like..."Amber Alert....details on the LIG board" pinned to the top of the topic list, and locked so no posting could take place in it, only on the LIG board. I would also say that this would be the only type of incident that would get this treatment, no charity fundraisers, etc.

We're the IFISH Community...and a community should all know about things like this.

ARGH... I guess I have to decide what is important, and I dunnawanna!

When I grow up, I just want to be a regular ifisher.

At first I thought LIG is a good spot for Amber Alerts.

But then I thought, what if it were my kid? I would want that everywhere, and in the most read places.

I am the one who posted the original Amber alert. It was almost immediately moved from the main board to LIG. I just about became uncorked and started a conversation with the mods, which apparently has ended with this thread.

So I will now make strengthen the point I made with the mods....Amber alerts should be on the main board as that is the most watched and read board. Point in case, I have been on ifish several times since this thread started and I did not know it existed until I receieved an email from the mod.

Amber Alerts have a short life span and should only be on ifish for the duration of the alert. It should be removed immediately upon expiration of the alert. Ifish should not give this precious space to any charity or hardluck story, unless they want to pay for it. However, things that are life threatening on a community scale, like nuclear or biological attacks should also be EVERYWHERE on the board.

Yesterday was the first AA since the system went into place several months agao. It is not something that will happen with great frequency. This is a no brainer and has been escalated to the ridiculous. Jen it is your board and you can do what you want. I will respect that regardless.

Excalated to the rediculous?
uh...
You know, ... ah never mind... Just doesn't sound very "respectful" to me...

Amber Alerts will go on the Fishing board.

After all, it's just fishing.
