Default Florida strain Largemouth vs....

I'm a bass fishing rookie so please be patient with me. I fished a couple private ponds this evening and had a blast. One of the ponds had Florida strain Largemouth it in (the land owner explained it to me) and the other had some other strain (looked just like every other Largemouth I've caught in southern Oregon). So my question is...is color really the only variation between Florida strain and the others? They seemed a little more vivid in coloration. Just curious. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Florida strain don't live as long as northern strain bass do, but they grow much faster and have the potential to reach much greater sizes (think up to 25lbs). Northern strain bass live a long time but only have the potential to grow up to about 15 lbs.

That makes sense. The pond with the Florida's has much larger fish than the other. I can't even imagine a 25lb bass! Thanks for the info.

If they were in a private pond that he had been stocked with a florida strain they are probaly not pure bread. Florida strain cannot survive Oregons climate to well. What they may have been is a cross bread between a northern strain male and a floridan strain female. Also known as the F-1. A true F-1 is the FIRST generation offspring from the 2 species. They tolerate colder weather better and grow faster than a northern. They also take on the more territorial and predatorial traits of a northern. (easier to catch than true florida's). Also, as the F-1's mature to spawning age and spawn with other f-1's, the offspring are no longer considered F-1's. The F-1 Gene pool fades out to an inferior strain. So if a guy has F-1's that is sweet, but to keep big fish for years to come in his pond he will have to restock the pond with new F-1's after the cycle reaches maturity. Good news though F-1's anly cost about $100 per 90 fingerlings.

I'll have to take everybody's word for this. Again, all I know is what the land owner told me. I appreciate everybody's input.
