Default Lake of the Woods or Fourmile?

Has anyone fished Lake of the Woods or Fourmile Lake yet this year? I'm assuming the road to Fourmile is open by now?...

I tried to check out fourmile a week and a half ago and only got to mp 2. The drifts were still up to my bumper (mid thigh), and completely covering the entire roadbed. I may try again this week after work.

I fished lake of the woods about a week and half ago and caught some small trout (8"-10") and one rainbow about 16 inches. marked some big fish on the bottom but couldnt catch any of those guys. the same day I tried to get up to fourmile and the drifts were deep. had to drive through them and then pull the boat through with a chain. made it up about 3.5 miles. I just read the ODFW report and apparently the road is open up to about a mile from the lake as of tuesday. I am hoping it will be open this weekend. Ive only been up there one time (without a boat) and didnt do real good. Im hoping to get into some kokanee and trout. does anyone have any tips for fishing it? thanks in advance.

Thanks for the update guys. I have only fished Fourmile once and it was from a friend's drift boat...no motor or fish finder and the wind was horrible. Needless to say we didn't stick around too long. I know there are some nice fish in there and I want to take my boat up there to give it a try. I would like to get into some of the browns in Lake of the Woods. Does anyone know if they still catch any kokanee out of there? I haven't heard much about it lately. Thanks again.

Klamanite,
That Brown on your avatar is one of the most beautiful fish I've ever seen! If you don't mind me asking was it from local waters?

Thanks a bunch, I'm pretty proud of that fish. I caught and released him at East lake last July There's another pic of him at the top of the page in the trophy thread. Also, if you go to trophy trout hunter on the web there's lots of incredible fish in there too

Oh I drool over that site daily. I was planning a trip to East Lake at the end of this month (I've never been) but my big motor just kicked the bucket so I'm not sure about timing now. Anyway you should be very proud of that fish! Its incredible. Hopefully I will run into you on the water some day. I'd love to swap some fishing stories.

I was the first vehicle this year to make it into to fourmile yesterday and fishing was good for trout in the 14-18 inch range. Didn't mark any kokanee or big fish in the deeper water though. morning was very foggy, cold and windy. the fog eventually burned off, but the wind persisted as long as we were there. headed to lake of the woods about 2 o'clock and there was kokanee all over the screen. started jigging and managed eight fish. Trolled for a while and got one strike, that was it.

there was some snow drifts that you could drive around on the way up there, but there was one at the very end that no one had driven through that I got about halfway through and had to dig/winch the rest of the way. after I broke the first trail, there was other people driving through it as well and by the end of the day, the bottom of the ruts had melted and were down to gravel. I would say just about any pickup could get through there now. better get up there!

ORtrapper,
Thanks for the report. I had planned on giving it a try yesterday but my kicker motor died on me Saturday afternoon (my big motor died a couple weeks ago) so I was out of comission. I'm hoping to have everything squared away and try this weekend. Were the trout caught trolling? Do the kokanee in Lake of the Woods get a lot of pressure? I haven't fished it a lot but I've never seen many people that were obviously after kokes. Thanks again.

Yeah we were catching fish in fourmile trolling spoons in about 20-30 feet of water along the shore. didnt see ANY kokanee in there, have you had any luck with that? I have been up to LOTW twice this year and have not seen anyone else fishing for kokanee, I dont think they get much pressure. it seems that all of them are concentrated in the deepest part of the lake and the biggest I caught was about 10 inches. Im not quite sure yet, but Im pretty sure I will be up there again this weekend.

I have never fished kokes in Fourmile so I really don't have any frame of reference. I was telling Klamanite that I read a report stating that this was supposed to be a great year for the kokes in there but I haven't heard any good reports so I'm a little puzzled. I'm planning on heading up there Sunday just to try out the new motor and fish a little. Thank you very much for the report.

I launched my 16 ft Fisher Sport Avenger there in quite a storm last fall and we had a lot of fun. Need 4X4 because of loose sand launch area.

Do any of you guys fish for the browns in Lake of the Woods? I'm going to give it a try in the next few weeks but I haven't heard any reports in a while.
