Default Ollallie Lake Update

I went up through Estacada and it will be another month before it opens. I did not even make it to the Oak Grove Campground (I think it is Oak Grove, campground about 3 miles before Ollallie). Saw a raised 4x4 get stopped and have to back out.
Did a little fishing along the Breitenbush, but did not catch anything; then went up the Santiam a ways and caught one. Had the girlfriend with me, so I only put in about 45 minutes tops.
Time to go after something bigger this week. Going to go after a summer, swimmer, or nook on the Clack, hopefully I fair better.

Hey Drifter I was going up in the middle of the month do ya think campgrounds might be open by then how close could you get to the lake and how much snow? I was going to take my 76 yr old father he hasn't been up there for about 30 years so I was hoping to get him up there one more time before his days are over maybe have to wait until after the fourth, hope not. Thanks KK

Unless they get a snow plow up there, I am thinking 4th of July weekend. I could not even make it to the T to head into Olallie. From the T it is 3-4 miles.

Hope that helps,

RB Drifter

Just checking on Ollallie access reports too. I am not familiar with Oak Grove Camp Ground. I have a Geo Cache at Triagle lake that I use as a tripwire for the road access into the Ollallie basin. Someone was into the Triangle Lake Equestrian Camp Ground--3 miles north of Ollallie Resort-- On Sunday 6-14-09. I have emailed them to ask how far south of Triangle Lake they went . If you are interested I will forward the info to this tread if they reply.
Thanks , Chuck --

That would be great if you could forward the thread. I don't imagine it will be open before the 4th of July and I don't think it was stocked last year, so the fishing will be real tough.

Here is the reply I got ---

Hi Bigcountry1961,

Glad to hear from you. There is still quite a bit of snow up there. We were able to drive about a mile and a half past Triangle lake before we were stopped by the snow. We would say it was about a foot and a half deep and hard as a rock ;-) Earlier in the day, we hiked up to Indian Lakes. There wasn't too much snow on the hike but when we reached the lake, we found it covered in snow. We figure it will be another few weeks before you'll be able to reach Olallie.

Humm not sure what lake they were at, but I drove right to the lake yesterday. As expected pretty slow as far as fishing, dont think many hold overs left in that lake.

If anybody is interested in camping up there thats a different story. I could only get halfway around the lake with 2 foot drifts still blocking road. Well I probably could of made it but I was'nt in the mood to chain up in case I got stuck. That snow is rock hard still, I was driving on top of drifts and not sinking in. More cold weather moving in this weekend, snow level 6000' or lower Saturday night. Olallie is 5000' or so.

Does'nt seem like stocking is a priority since the resort part shut down, or the rumor that odfw does'nt want to stock the high lakes anymore. Oh well I'll still go up there picniking either way.

Does anyone know if this lake will be stocked this year, since the resort will not be up and running. I miss catching the big old brooders out fo there.

I was looking into that myself. All I could come up with was 2 scheduled stocking dates, last week being one. I called a number I found online but they couldnt say whether the truck stocked or not, just that it was scheduled to stock. If anyone knows a place to call to see if the truck made it up to a specific place and stocked it is what we need. One thing I didnt know that Olallie is under the management of the Dalles office.

The weekly ODFW update says that the lake was indeed stocked this past week. I also checked with the Mt Hood Nat Forest, and was told that the people who were running the Olallie Lake Resort have left that business. I know that last winter (2008-09) really knocked them with a lot of damage.

A new owner is apparently in the process of getting the permit and making that place run again. I would say it's doubtful that they can get it up and running this season, but am happy to see that someone is making a go of it. It's a great spot.

This might be my favorite little lake out there. Is camping open? I will be going the second week of August. I hope it is re-opened. that spot is great.

I was up there on Saturday.
The camp sites were open and the boat rental was up and running. The road was clear and there was no snow at all. The store was not open, but there was someone there doing some reapirs to it. The boat ramps were all clear and operational, the outhouses had TP and were semi clean.

The bugs were out in force, so bring some spray.

The fishing was great. It was a nice day up there.

I spent part of the day rowing around Monon lake and picked up a few brookies which were large and fat.

There was not a lot of pressure up there.

Everything looked good, except the dusty roads and skeeters.

I fished Monon and nailed a few brookies. Ollalie has been planted so there should be fish all over.

No swimming in the lake either from what I remember. We have used a solar shower in the past and they work pretty sweet.

Ollallie lake is a non contact water area.... as well as no motors allowed... Row boats only and stay out of the water... Once you see how crystal clear it is down to 25ft deep or so, you wont want to swim in it and dirty it up... It is one of the clearest lakes I have seen in long time.... except for Little crater lake.... I think its a litttle more than 3 miles to Ollallile from Oak creek... its aleast 1mi just to the triangle intersection, next to the ranger station....
