Hope someone can help with my merc

So when my merc 40hp 402 is in neutral the prop will spin clockwise but it makes a clicking noise, it will not spin in reverse at all. When in the water, I kick it in reverse and it goes forward, if I put it forward it goes forward fine. It runs very good, Hope someone can help! Thanks

Almost sounds like the shift dog in the lower unit is wore out and not slecting the gears right.

Check to make sure your locknuts have not backed off on your linkage adjustment ...

Have you had the lower unit apart lately?

If so...here is a post talking about how the gearcase can geto outta whack from the linkage.....check out my reply about halfway down...

Thanks for all the help guys!!! I found out a little bracket on the linkage was broken! I replaced that and I'm good to go on that.... now when I put it in reverse the motor doesn't lock... I swear its never ending with boats! HAHA
Anyway it looks to me like the lock lever mechanism is just rattling free... Do I have to talk the lower end off to fix this?
