Default Metal Detectors

It's my birthday, and by golly, I have wanted a metal detector for beach hunting for as long as I can remember.
My Grandfather had one, and we had such fun with it! We found an old antique gun on his property, a ring... all kinds of fun stuff.
I want one that will help me find old lures on the river beach, and money and fun stuff on the ocean beaches.
Does anyone know what I am looking for? It can't be too heavy, cuz of my muscle problems, but I want it to be good enough to be worth the purchase.
Can anyone educated on this subject help me? Does anyone have one for sale?
I'm going to look at ebay stuff, too.
Jen

I'm as ignorant about metal detectors as I am about most things, but let me be the first to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Cheezzzzz,

You little bandit!

White's electronics in Sweet Home builds good detecters.

They are used for mining or prospecting or something.

Any way, they used to sell reconditioned ones.

Asak Skein to check it out for you he lives over there.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

Boy, that thing would be going off all the time around here.

Oh wait, that says "metal" and not "mental". Nevermind.

Happy Birthday Jen!

Unfortunately I can't give you advice on detectors, but I've heard the White's is a good quality product.

Might check out http://goldprospectors.com/links.cfm. They list several suppliers including Belda's Detector Sales in Bend, OR [www.goldbummin.com]. I would expect that folks like these could advise what kind is most appropriate to your interests and limitations. Good luck and good hunting.

Hey Jen, I may be of a little help on this. I did lots of research and comparisons and about 3 weeks ago purchased a whites metal detector . I bought the idx pro because it had descrimination for separting metals in trashy areas, has a function to change frequencys if you are detecting with a friend nearby, since detectors cant work side by side on he same frequency. it is also light and ballances well(4 lbs) It also is a detector that is relatively simple in that there are presets that allow you to turn on and go. I chose whites mainly because it is a local product and I was able to drive to sweet home for a demo, now they are not retailersand will not cut you muh of a deal even on demo models. I went to one of their local retailers and they basically can sell them for 100$ less then what is posted on the web site. I searched ebay quite a bit and figured that with the average selling prices being only slightly les than ohter online retailers I bought from Kelly co and got all kinds of accesories. the head phones are nice and people wont huddle around you when it beeps! Kelly co was even less than my local dealers by about $80 including shipping. Now on the board people talk about lots of expensive stuff but I dont believe that the ones below my model are inferior infact a classic series with out the ID feature would be just fine by me cause right now I even enjoy finding bottle caps. ask me some questions and we will see if I am of help! and happy birthday

I'd like to know how much to expect to spend on a fairly good one.
I don't need a professional model, just one that works and is fun, yet strong enough to find interesting things deeper down.
I'll be using it on rock beaches, and in the sand.

Jennie, I already answered this on the fishing board with your birthday wish, but here goes again! My husband and I both have White's XLT's and love them. They have many features including 5 preset programs. You can change frequencies so two can be used together and not interfere with each other. You can also set up your own programs. I found an 1895 dime on our high school football field that was at least 8" deep. How deep it will pick up signals depends on the type of ground you're hunting. You can email them with questions at whites@halcyyon.com. We paid around $650 for mine. If you have any ?? email me and I will try to help!!

That is more than I can afford to pay.
I think I'll look into used ones....

I didn't know they were so spendy.

If you dont want to spend much money this may be an option.
LINK

I saw one this weekend in PDX when I was walking down the aisle. Didnt stop and look at it, and have no idea what kind of quality this machince is. They had a couple different models, the other one was cheaper.
Link to cheaper model

Just an option.

I know there are a lot of less expensive ones out there. You just want to be aware that the really cheap ones do not discriminate out junk or read nearly as deep of signals. This is just the one we chose for the features and ease of use. My husband did a lot of research before he decided on the White's. Whichever you choose, you will have a blast with it!!! It is so cool not knowing what the next signal will be!!

One of the things I remembered is that in hunting mineralized grounds you will ay benefit from a detector with a black sand filter. Call Jim Huston at whites and with some questions. As for prices I cant recomend paying tat much for a detector when i am just getting started, but i have the 2003 catalog in front of me and it looks that whites classic III has the black sand filter and goes for about $275, but no id seperation, so you would have to learn the different sounds metal make, which is probably something all good detector people can do? not me! Here is one thing that I really like abot my detector and that is that it has a trigger switch that really allows you to pin point your target or "treasure"

I think that the reason you are double posting, is that you hit the back button after writing a reply. Instead, try using the button at the bottom, that says: (Whatever community you are in) and then GO FISH!

It works a lot better.

ok lets try again! So for more info www.whiteselectronics.com and 1-800-547-6911 for a brochure then you will know to expect to pay about 100 to 150$ less than their catalog, via local dealer or online.
Your Closest Local Dealer
CEDABOB 1.0 miles

I would have bought frommy local dealer if he would have known anything about them cause then I could expect to get some help and support, he may have some demos, rentals, or used units available?
