Default High speed chase

I was heading to west lynn tonight and almost got killed by some crazy guy in an F-150. He was going about 80 on some road with alot of traffic going 35. A cop was chasing him when he came a coupla inches from clipping my bumper as I tried to get out of the way. After this he almost hit two more cars, flew through a parking lot, then out the other side. It appeared to me to be some kinda high speed chase out of one of those "worlds best police chases" shows. I had was hoping to find out what it was all about. Anybody hear of anything like this tonight?

I didn't hear anything, and am concerned that an officer would continue the engagement if the speeds are so high in a 35mph area with traffic. That's a recipe for disaster.

Geek,
It depends on why he was chasing him.

What kind of crime would be so horrible that it's worth speeding at two-and-a-half times the speed limit, risking the lives of innocent people? High-speed chases going 80 in a 35 is just as bad as firing on a criminal in a crowd.

Yeah, stop that!

I wasunder the impression that most police departments have policies of not pursuing high speed chases through metro areas. I think it works like if they don't catch the person quickly, they back off and track down the plates or use copters.

Well...... What if it was a truck full of terrorist heading downtown to set off a dirty bomb? Or some gang bangers that just did a drive by at a grade school? Or a bunch of conservatives heading to a pro Bush rally

It was most likely someone that didn't come to a full stop and made a right turn or some kid that was suspected of smoking pot, or someone that forgot to put the new registration stickers on their plates.

We can't make a blanket rule here but common sense should be used.

Dirty bomb: chasing them might make them crash, thereby detonating the bomb.

Gang Bangers after a shooting: they've already shown a willfull disregard for human life, so hitting someone in a high-speed chase would be nothing. Back off.

Conservatives going to a Bush rally: shoot `em.

Do you know how to tell if a guy and gal headed to a Bush Rally in a pickup are married??

There will be tobacco juice spit on both sides of the truck.......

The cop was probably trying to pull him over for not wearing a seat belt.

Why are we blaming the cop when it's the guy taking it to those speeds who is at fault? If you want to see more criminals get away, just let them go if they start to speed. Any criminal will know that's all he needs to do to avoid apprehension.

Continuing to chase them at high speeds through a residential neighborhood risks lives. Sure the criminal is the one speeding first, but by disengaging they would get the perpitrator to slow down as well.

It's just not safe.

Ok, do you know he was really going 80? Did it seem that way because it startled you? Most agencies have a policy giving the officer the discresion(sp?) in continuing. Things they consider, time o day, road conditions, traffic and what caused the pursuit to begin with. If you a problem with the way the officer handled the situation, call and ask to talk with a sergeant

Id say there is a good chance foxer is right. He was going REALLY REALLY fast, but, it was very close to me, and when you look into your mirror, see lights, and a guy flying by you, it might not have been 80. But he did pass me like I was standing still, and he wasnt putting around. I wouldnt blame the officer either, I got to watch as the truck as he swirved around and almost hit the two cars infront of me. and the cop was ALOT more in control than the truck.

I trust the judgement of the police, and I think we can assume that they were doing what is in the best interest of the citicens, as that is the purpose of their job, to protect us

And I just re-read my post, and I realized that it might sound like the cop almost hit me, but it was the truck, sorry if that was confusing.
