Default Michael Moore on 60 minutes tonight

Perhaps some of the folks out there may consider taking off their texas BS tinted glasses long enough to watch. You may learn something new.

I know there are a few of us out here do support a number of his points of few.

Hey fishbane, my wife has one of the first 50,000 books he published, STUPID WHITE MEN that was going to be pulped before the librarian association made Rupert Murdock release it for sale. We attended his lecture at Lewis $ Clark Collage a year or so ago and got it autographed.

Yeah, I agree that some folks on this board should pay closer attention to the details.

Thanks for the heads-up

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Greenspirit? Don't know what that is. If you'd like to see his documentary work from the local video store go rent "Roger and Me". This'll get you loving that Detroit steel.

His latest work is Bowling for Columbine, up for a Oscar in the documentary section, and widely considered to be one of the ten best movies of last year.

You're right, I'm thinking of Patrick Moore. Some of the people on this board should read his stuff. He's the former founder of Greenpeace & the Rainbow Warrior leader who has now seen the light and has renounced his former misguided thinking. Check out his essay at www.greenspirit.com Its over on the left side....just click on "Trees Are The Answer".

So who is Michael Moore?

I am currently reading "Stupid White Men" and have seen "Roger and Me" and "The Big One"
Michael Moore is one of the most insightful and humorous pundits of our time.

Shane:

Pick up "Downsize This" and add it to your bookshelf. It's better than "Stupid White Men", and the book that he was on tour supporting when he did "The Big One".

GSA, Moore is a satirical type of writer that uses various interview/documentary tactics to focus attention on small issues that point to larger problems at the institutional level.

I believe he did time on Saturday Night live too.

I tried to watch, but was in and out due to kids. Could someone explain his stance on guns? I saw where the comparisons to Great Brittain, Canada, and other places, then saw a hostile? interview with Charleton Heston. I never got to see his point of view on the matter. Please enlighten or educate me, as I am from Texas and only know about monster trucks and bull ridin' according to COTR!

X-tex - Based on the 60 minutes appearance, he's a big fat slob who has a knack of getting people to talk to him, on camera . He asked Charlton Heston a question and when the 80-yr old geezer (sad to see if you ever saw BenHur) stumbled on the answer, he thought that was significant. He points out some obvious societal flaws.....and made a million bucks on his book.....so people give him credibility. He seems to be anti-gun.....thinks they are too easy to get. Made a big deal of opening a bank account and deposited enough money to get the top prize, a hunting rifle. Then he aimed it at the camera and dry fired it.

I was refering to anyone who buys the whole Bush arguments on war and life in general. If the shoe fits though. He is our chief thief.

Michael Moore is not anti gun( he is a life time member of the NRA) as much as he was asking why in America we have so many ( x 100 This doesn't include suicide figures) more gun realted deaths then other countries.

Hestons statement was a racist one. Pure and simple. I guess if you agree with it then well.... The facts and figures don't point to race. If you saw the whole movie and interview you would see that, Heston was not ambushed. Just becuase he played Moses doesn't make him a good man. No matter what side of gun control and life you are on I would recomend watching his movie's and reading his books to see some his points and questions about our society.

Two of the other 60 minute stories point directly to issues that should be changed by our goverment but won't be since we have Bush as president.

Failing eguipment for our soldiers in the field.
Bush doesn't care that our troops will be dieing as long as he and his admin get the oil. Anyone who supplies products for defense have no accountability anymore. It's the law under bush. Defense companies don't even have to pay American Taxes anymore or be based in America. This is our admin showing real patriotism isn't it.

A doctor getting away with hundreds of unneeded open heart surgeries for no real reson except to make money. You know we have to cap malpractice suits to fix our health care system according to Bush.

Okay, I'm going to try and cover as many points as possible here. First off, to get a glimpse of what the movie is about go ahead and go to the website. There you can see clips from the movie. I really like the animated one myself.

fishbane:

Saw the whole show. It's scary that we're sending our soldiers out into this so unprepared, especially after what happened the last time we were there. It took the government years to come close to admitting to what is now called Gulf War Syndrome, and the exposure to sarin gas by tens of thousands of our soldiers. You'd think that we would have learned, but eight years of Clinton and four of the shrubs did nothing about this.

GSA:

You're knee-jerking again. Are we to judge the messenger by his appearance or by his message? Yeah, the common-man fat guy look is his schtick, but so what? His body of work (sorry) includes two books, a classic documentary (Roger and Me) about the distruction of his home town by Chrysler, two television shows that, while they didn't do well in the States, still conveyed some wonderful information and political satire through humor, and now BFC. If you are so inclined I would recommend the viewing of either of those documentaries (Roger and Me should be at your local video store).

foxer:

If he just wrote letters to KMart or testified in front of Congress about these things the only folks who would hear the message would be the C-SPAN junkies. Instead, he walks up to many of these folks and asks them questions that we want to have asked. He's admitted that he hates doing it, but he also knows that he's doing what many of us would like to do if we had someone paying us to do it. Inviting the Board of Directors of Humana insurance to the funeral of a guy (still alive) who they denied a life-saving pancreas operation because it wasn't a covered benefit not only made them uncomfortable, not only did it make the local news (PR nightmare), but it also got the man that pancreas transplant and changed their rules so that all future pancreas transplants are covered. If Mr. Moore has to resort to "ambush tactics" to get stuff done (and he's gotten a lot more than this done through his work), then I applaud him for doing it.

For the record, Mr. Moore is not against guns, or people owning guns. He shows that Canada is a population that owns a LOT of guns, but has hardly any gun violence. The folks who are saying that he's anti-gun are saying that because they haven't seen the movie.

Spend a few dollars. See the movie. It's an interesting movie.

Stew - I stand by my statement........I'd never seen the guy before, and based on what I saw on 60 minutes, what I said is accurate. The guy is a controversial public figure.......and therefore fair game.

How can what I posted be compared to the personal insults, slams and flames between Ifish participants that Jennie is worried about?..........

OK, STG, you're right. Michael Moore isn't a big fat slob.......he's a somewhat rotund, jovial-appearing fellow with a scraggley beard & haircut who wears loose, comfortable clothing even when on national TV.........and I'm jealous because he is worth a million bucks and is younger than me, too.

Better?

GsA,
You are correct that Mike Moore is a big fat slob. He is a guy that chooses to look like a slob while being rich. He chose that image to make money, and more power to him for doing something we would all like to do if we could figure it out. Moore is a media (slu.) ..grabber but has a point that the media overlooks.
Moore has been able to point out things that you never would have thought about, and now you might.

scrod, boy do you have your facts wrong. Prior to Moore's book (Stupid White Men) hitting the best sellers list (one year ago) he could barley pay the light bill. Yes he is not poor now and I wish you guys would do a little research on whatever subjects you choose to discuss before you go slamming people that you obviously know nothing about. It makes you look silly. Just a thought.

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">This thread just won't die.

Day Late:

Please do yourself a favor and do some research before you make up your mind about something. He's not blaming inanimate objects for what happened at Columbine. One of the topics he explores in the movie is why there are so many gun-related deaths in the United States, when there are countries that have just as many guns per capita, if not more, that have significantly fewer of these types of deaths per capita. And no, he doesn't even blame Ritalin.

If you care to read more on what the movie is about you can go to the Bowling for Columbine website.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">That's a bit of an overstatement, spey. He had invested a large amount of his own money to film BFC, and money that was owed to him for other projects was late in arriving. What was worse was that he had planned on money coming in from the sales from SWM, and with the delay in publishing it really made finances tight. He did get to the point where he could barely pay for the light bill in his New York office, but eventually the money started coming in and all is well now.

While he wasn't exactly a millionare, he wasn't exactly accepting food stamps either.
