Default Lube for lower part of motor

When i bought a boat dirt cheap from a good friend he gave me a 9.8hp merc 110? its black and red so i think its late 70 early 80's cannot find a serial number, my question is he said i need to remove 2 screws and pump grease in from the bottom and wait till the new stuff come out top does anyone know what he is talking about? and what type of grease should i get for this motor, is this just packign grease for the lower unit? sorry for my ignorance i never had a boat motor and don't want to ruin anything...

It is a marine grade 90 weight gear oil. The top screw is a vent and the bottom is a drain. You buy a pump and pump the gear case oil in the bottom hole till it flows out the top hole. It is now full. You put in the top plug first to create a vacume seal of sorts and it gives you time to remove the pump nozzle from the lower hole and insert the bottom plug. Always use new gaskets and make sure both plugs are tight.
Or P.M. me and I can tell you where to take it for service...depending on where you live.

The 1st thing I would do is get a Mercury repair manual that covers this motor. What he wants you to do is remove the lower unit gear grease, and replace it with new lub. You remove the lower screw to drain the old lub out (look for discoloration or water in the old lub) and the upper screw is the vent and full marking level.
You pump the new lub in from the bottom, and when it comes out the top screw hole, the unit is full. Replace the top screw and then put in the bottom screw. Steven Marine will sell you the proper lub to use. Don't forget new gasket seals on the screws. My sound like a challenge to 1st time, but easy once you have everything.
Good luck and enjoy your new boat and motor.

Adding from the bottom plug pushes all the air out the top, ensuring a full amount of oil. My 15hp Merc didn't take a whole lot either. I was kind of surprised how little it actually took.
