Default censored or not???

I recently put up a reply to a post and used the word "skanky" to describe a seagull I had inadvertantly hooked. I checked in the next day to find it was ******. I e-mailed Jen about it and we bantered a bit about it and she ended up challenging me to put up a post about it.
I'll one up her and make a poll. I do not put cuss words in my posts or take routes to cheat.
As long as I can remember my fishing buddies and I used this word to describe many things but mostly "boots" ie dark fish and other undesireable critters.
I suppose it could be used in other contexts but was mildly suprised to see it bleeped.
Maybe I'm getting old or am missing something but my question is:

Is "skanky" a term so derogatory that it should not be used on this fine forum???
Just for fun, and yes, I AM bored tonight!!!

I don't see what's wrong with it. I use it all the time in polite company, and nobody seems to mind.
I usually use it when describing my dirty laundry or water quality in the Willamette.

According to Websters:

Skank - Skank'y (adj):
1 - A rhythmic dance performed to reggae or ska music, characterized by bending forward, raising the knees, and extending the hands.
2 - Disgusting or vulgar matter; filth.
3 - One who is digustingly foul or filthy and often considered sexually promiscuous. Used especially of a woman or girl.

It's obvious your use of the word is best described by #2.

Thanks for the heads up. BTW, NOT "my" word, I just inherited it. I don't suscribe to vulgarity or advocate it, especially on this family friendly forum.

cheers,

Mike

Sorry, I did not intend to make you think I was against your use of the word. On the contrary.. I see no problem with using the word to describe something that is disgusting or filthy.

I voted "skanky" yeah.

after reading the definition i would think this word is ok depending on how the word is used. so i am abstaning from voting because it does not give enough choices. i would say if you were to describe a seagull that was skanky then that should be ok. but i understand where Jennie is coming from, she is just trying to keep people from being offended.

I am unconfortable about censorship. But a little control has made this a pleasant site. But you did not exhibit mal intent.

There's plenty of vulgarity on this board. Just no profanity. Big difference.
I'm amazed that it was in Webster's. I thought it was recent slang.

Too funny! You did it!

I searched through the word filter that came with the UBB, and sure enough, there it was, in three forms, using Skanky, sk@nky, and one other, I forget.
Since I didn't know this was a bad word, either, I took it out.
I don't PERSONALLY censor these words, it's automated...
Anyway, skank away.... whatever it means!

UH OH!
I just did a google search after someone wrote to me that Skanky is indeed a very derogatory term.
I typed in Skanky, and.... I won't even tell you the results!
It is usually aimed at loose women.

ISH!

I was wrong!

Since the internet is something like 2/3 or more adult content, it doesn't surprise me that google (an internet search engine) would turn up those kinds of results.

Say you wanted to buy a new bikini for that Mexico vacation coming up. You perform a search on the word "bikini"......... Many words with even a hint of adult topics will produce many undesirable results.
