Default E-mail Can\'t Send Pics?

OK, I've got a brand new hp computer and windows xp. Set up last week and it worked fine; emailed several digital pics with no problem, at least one was high resolution, all were sent on the "small email" size setting.

Then friday I tried emailing a high-res pic and the email program choked. Couldn;t send or receive all weekend. Now, the ISP guy says the problem is my connection (either 24 or 26.4 kbps) is too slow and I'll need to use my own website (which he'll set up), post my pics there, and then tell people to go there to see them.

He deleted the email with the photo and supposedly fixed the problem and will have my website ready later today......but I still can't send any email altho can recieve, for right now anyway.

Anyone got any suggestions? If I could email pictures last week, why not now?

GSA -

My guess is that it is size and throughput related. Really big high res photos can easily be from a 1/2 to a meg or more in size. If your connection was poor (bad telephone lines cause a lot of tranmission errors - think "static" like you would have on voice calls). The resend of data packets for those images on slow speed, poor connections probably caused a comflouxerian process instratulation, thereby dissaflusion and interoscilliation occurred. In fact, the first time you may have been lucky to get a good connection to and through the ISP to your endpoints.

Until you can get high speed access and clean data throughput, you may be in a pixel vortex as far as high res goes...

Huh?

I live out in the boonies and we're lucky to have telephones....no TV cable or other cable out here.

Occasionally my internet connection will show 26.4 kbps but today its only 24.0 .......could that be enough to make a difference and explain why it worked last week when I noticed it was 26.4 a couple times.......

Geez, the main reason i bought the digital camera, scanner and computer was to be able to send photos. Don't tell me I need to move to town. :depressed:

I have fiber optics at the end of my gravel road but 25+ year old copper to the fiber.
I have my wire all upgraded but the phone company laughed at me when I asked them to upgrade theirs. On a good day I hit 33. If I was working I wouldn't pay the $45.00 plus for a DSL.

If the images are already jpeg's then they're not going to compress too awful much more than they already are. You'd need to reduce the resolution and dimensions to get the best file size.

Thanks for all the great ideas guys, but I am so computer illiterate that I don't know a zip file from a zip lock bag..........right now my e-mail doesn't work at all and my ISP guy says the problem is I need my own web page, or something, and not to worry.......Why did the damned thing work last week but not today and why is there no hope of getting it back working now??? I'm gonna need a new monitor if I get any more PO'd! Grrrr.......

It's possible that your email program is still trying to send that big message. There should be a section called your Outbox. Find it, and then see if that big message is still sitting there. If it is, delete it and your problems are miraculously solved.

Oh, and zipping a file is like taking the file and writing it in shorthand. Makes the whole thing smaller, but some files compress better than others. JPEG's don't compress well, as they are already compressed.

What the geek said for the e-mail.

On the camera, you shoudl be able to adjust the size of the pictures in at least three ways. Warning, this will probably require some consulting of the manual. I suggest you have a beer first.

Digital cameras all work by coverting the image into a file, which has a size of so many dots across, by so many dots high. The more dots, the bigger the file. Your goal is to get the size of that file, AT THE TIME YOU ARE E-MAILING it to be smaller. You can do this at three times:

- when the picture is taken by the camera
- when the picture is downloaded from the camera to your PC
- after the picture is downloaded, by a program such as Adobe Photdeluxe or Photoshop.

On my camera, one of the menu options in the camera itself sets the resolution between the options basic, normal, and fine. Fine gives the best resolution for printing, but also the largest file size. I suggest that you continue using either normal or fine if you want to print the pictures

Nikon gives you downloading software, and in that software, when you download, you can have the software download the pictures to a coarser resolution during the download. This would meet your needs for e-mailing, but the downloaded pciture will not print as well. I don't recommend this option, either.

My scanner (yup, changed devices on you) came with Adobe Photo Deluxe, a photoediting program. This program gives you the option to edit and save the picture to a variety of file sizes. Somewhere under export if the option to save to .jpg (jpeg) file format, and it should allow you to specify the resolution. Experiment with that until you get a file size of under 150kb for easy e-mailing.

If you don't have a photo-editing program, you will want one. Most cameras come with something that will serve. I have photoshop, the industrial strength program, which is nice, but expensive and overkill for what you are trying to do. Adobe Photodeluxe is pretty handy, I am sure that there are others.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ping with more questions if I can help.

Geek - Huh?

Thx, I'll try that.......again.

Edit: I deleted one message in outbox and then a spam email came in. Hurray, its fixed!
But then I tried to send a test email and again there is no connnection and apparent email gridlock........

GSA, are there other e-mails in the outbox? If there are, try deleting them all.

Yeah, I already deleted everything....now I can't even get the start email screen. Yup, this Windows XP/hp puter is a real technological advance......

And, after opening or trying to open my email program and then go back to a website like ifish I have to reboot because everything goes into slo-mo.

When the slo mo is happening, try hitting ctrl -alt- del to get the task manager and see what the task manager tells you. This should pop up a window that tells you what programs you have running.

Side question, do you have virus software installed?

I have had the same types of problems on my dial-up connection also. When I have these problems (and it is the old phonelines) I call the phone company up, tell I am haveing phone static (even if im not) and that I am getting knocked off the net allot (once again even if I'm not). You may have to call them 4 to 5 times, but after a few visits they will get it fixed to get you off their back. Has worked for me and I normaly connect at 46k to 48k and have no problems, but I had to ride them to get it fixed. Also go out to the connection box where you lines come into the house (moisture will oxidize the wires & posts) loosen the screews and clip off about 2 inches of wire and re-strip it, then clean the brass sreews and post really good and put it back together, that has helped allot for me in the past also.

SH - Yes, I got Norton right out of the box and it is supposedly working.

BFO - Thanx, yes , our phone lines are bad out here (14 miles out of JC) and have lots of static - I'll try complaining to USWorst. And, I'll try trimming the phone line ends, altho they're only a year old.

So,

1) have you bought the update function to Norton, so that you are getting the updates to Norton. Getting it out of the box is only the first step, you have toget the updated virus definitions, which are gotten from the internet form their site. I ask this just to see if you might possibly be having some virus using the e-mail. Long shot, but thought I'd ask.

2), when you are in slo mo as you call it, when you bring up the task manager, by hitting ctrl-alt- del, what shows up in the task list? What programs(tasks), and what is their status?

Well, I signed up and downloaded everything - and when I click on the Norton icon it says system status is active, etc, including email. However, yesterday my ISP guy said it didn't look like my email was being screened, or something. He doesn't think I have a virus.......

I haven't tried cont-alt-del yet. I'll check email in a few minutes then see what happens.

Email servers are slow beasts, and sending large files like that over a modem will sometimes make them choke. Remember, you don't need a full-resolution image for a person to see them on their screen. On the contrary, if they aren't going to print them they can have one a small fraction of the size and still see the full effect of those brute fish of yours.

GSA,

Ctrl-alt-del doesn't reboot the computer, it shows you the task list of what is running. It will show you what is bogged down. Suggest you try it. Or not... Good luck

I spent over 5 hours today with my ISP support guy trying to figure out why I can't send d-mail. He tried everything he could think of - check and double and triple check all settings, accounts, etc., etc., uninstall Outlook Express, reinstall Outlook Express, set up e-mail program thru Yahoo, set up special dialup thru old slow server,.........everything...I sat and watched. And nothing worked. I can receive but cannot send email. Last week it worked fine and I sent several emails and emails with photos attached. No problem. It choked on an email with picture of chinquapin boards I was sending to STGrule, I think. Now, its broke and can't be fixed??? Jeez, I love computers!!!

Hooray, it's fixed!!! My email works again thanks to over 7 hours of effort by my ISP support guy. Turned out the problem was something called Freedom Security which was a icon on my desktop screen that somehow got enabled and prevented anything from going out.

Anyway, I think the problem is solved.......and if anyone in the Salem-Eugene area needs a new ISP then try Cyber Internet Services (Cyberis) in Salem. Eugene # is 484-1717. They went above & beyond the call to get my problem fixed.
