Default Poll: Censorship of your posts

How many users would use a site that did not censor your posts (an anything goes enter at your own risk site) where you could fully vent in any way, with any language use you so desired.

This is not fishing related and not relevant to this site.

It is clearly to agitate. Why do you do this?

Hogmaster.
To see what peoples thoughts are (not to agitate) as you put it, and yes it is fishing related as I am talking about a fishing site. It is a simple question, it could easily go either way. I am not into politicaly correct anything, but I think people should have places to go where they can speak their mind without being slamed with threats every time they do, what is it that you are so afraid of that this post "agitated you" I am sorry but you confuse me, all I want to know is what people want in a site, this poll will show that.

I am not going to vote. If you have been around for awhile, we played this game for months at a time during the RT & Hey Ya'll era.

Sorry for my bad attitude, if you are not aware of what I am eluding to.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Sorry, but I see no mention of fish in that question. The premise of it is against the ifish use policy so that is why it is not relevant to this site.

As a discussion topic, maybe Life in General. Here? No way.

The sites where there is little or no moderation are usually not very informative places to be. You usually get one or two members who will try to dominate what is discussed and that will cause problems. There are a few supposed fishing discussion sites like that and it's just one big flame war going on.
Jennie and the moderators do a good job here. Hey if you don't like being moderated then maybe this isn't the place for you

So once again, Shane S , I am sorry.

Bigfishon,

Ifish doesn't "censor" the messages.

People can say anything they want they just have to be civil, no personal insults, no profanity etc.

That is not censorship...unless you can't express yourself without cursing or insulting someone &lt;grin&gt;.

Not censored, just moved to a more appropriate place.

We do have some rules on Ifish. They're designed to keep things friendly and useful.

This thread was moved because it is not fishing related. The main board requires that posts be fishing related. If you haven't read the Acceptable Use Policy lately, it's worth the effort.

Lessseee..... Last time I checked they were everywhere, those kinds of boards.

I would say that yes, people do use them, and they are a mess!

Have fun building it, and have fun dealing with it!

If you think people slam you with threats all the time, perhaps it may be time to take a look at why?

Ah yes, the free speech idea.

First we will have racist comments, then slurs against religion and the next thing you know we will have sexist comments and then I would have to HURT someone.

No thanks.

I think some folks forget that sites like these (Ifish, Piscatorial Pursuits, etc) aren't a public resource. They are put up by someone (Jenny, Bob) for their purposes and their pleasure. It costs them money, and I don't see them charging us for the priviledge of hanging around.

Calling Jennie's rules "censorship" and complaining about it is a bit like complaining about someone who refuses to invite you over for dinner because you insist on swearing in front of his children. Yup, they are choosing not to have to listen to your speech, but guess what, it's their house you're speaking in.

If you don't want the restriction, well, learn how to use Usenet.

I have been to those places. They suck (sorry Jen, bad word). That is why I'm here and not there. If this isn't what you had in mind, try the other places. You'll probably be back.

When did censor become a dirty word?

Censorship, in its truest form, is an act of examining printed materials BEFORE they are put into public view.

However, "editing" or "gagging" is more the nature of "BFO's focus and concern in my opinion.

Ive often witnessed those who feel censored refer to the first amendment right , and quote "...freedom of speech..." wrong!

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Seems to me many people who feel as though they are subject to censorship fail to understand the definition of both the word, AND the first amendment.

The freedom of sheech does NOT remove accountability for what is said, offers no protection to those who rightfully speak thier minds beyond the right to do so, and offers no relief to anyone who may be asked to answer to charges arising from thier spoken words. Nor does it remove accountability to those who allow it to remain in view of those who find it offensive, libelous, slanderous, ILLEGAL (IE profanity and vulgar matarial viewed by children is often illegal) or otherwise harmfull in any nature.

I suggest people who feel as though they are being censored here or anywhere for that matter write to the Washington post or the NY times, and see what they do with the letter.. (office trashcan hoops anyone?)

I am amazed at how many US citizens are not the least bit in tune with thier constitutional rights, and the bill of rights. Its fair for me to say that though some fight tooth and nail to have thier way, and take refuge in what they believe to be thier "rights", many of them could not define thier "rights" to begin with.

But if this is how censorship is defined here, keep it up!!! I dont want my children exposed to any form of discusion where
they may be mislead or manipulted in a way which will lead them to believe that the freedom of speech is a get out of jail free card when it comes time to be held accountable for what they say.

Just my two (constitutionally protected) cents.

Further, to COR's point, the First Amendment right to freedom of speech only speaks to the government restricting the right of speech. It protects our right to wave signs in public places, and to criticise our government, as well as institutions with political power that might seek to use the government to quiet us down.

It doesn't give one any right to use any private forum or medium - that is granted solely by the owner of the medium, who can withhold the privilege for any, or no reasons whatsoever. Which is what this forum is. A better way to look at Ifish is that it's like the editorial section of the newspaper, which can choose to print, not print, or edit contributions as they see fit.

I like a clean site, the way I look at it is if a person can't express their self with out at lot of added foul wording it should not be on here. I would like to think my kids could view i fish and I should not have to worry about it.

Very well said, and all points well taken. My only reason for posting the poll was to see what people would think of such a site (basicaly a place to vent about fishing, I just forgot to use the word fishing in the poll and it was moved here). I like ifish, think it is well ran, I don't mind my posts being edited or even removed. I understand that not everyone here wants to see that type of stuff and that is why I was curious what people would think of having a place to vent that type of thought. I also understand that they pay the bills on this site and have the right to operate as they see fit (and they do so very well). I am a very currious sort of person, and I tend to ask questions and say things that are on my mind (many of us do) I am not bothered by the answers and opinons that I recieve, to me they are all usefull information.

SH I think you know that the Constitution, especially amendment 1 can be, and will be forever debated.

Theres a handfull of ways to interpret it seeking its true meaning, however, the most profoundly misinterpreted aspect in my opinion is that some people feel the freedom of speech eliminates *accountability* for what is said.

I voted a strong no, because I think I , and everyone else should conduct themselves in a manner befitting a real-world public forum.
Seems when people are not forced to use some restraint, they dont use any.

I'm with the majority I guess. I'm not interested in those kinds of sites for many of the same reasons so well stated by others in this thread.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against free-speech, and I'm also not against reasonable and prudent censoring either.

I think that Jen and the "Mod's" have set a great atmosphere on this site where a person can share thoughts and experiences, share info and learn, and establish positive relationships with others via internet communications.

Thanks for providing that opportunity.

A place to vent? I thought that that was what this forum was for? I for one, would not use it. There are already dozens, I'm sure, out there. You just have to look for them. Not my type of people, for certain.

Go to 8-95.com and get some web hosting.

Go to Go Daddy.com and get an easy to remember domain name that isn't already taken for less then nine bucks.

Go to Invision and download Invision Power Board for free, and then install it.

Spend numerous hours to setup a forum the way you like it, and write, rewrite, and rewrite again the user rules (even the most basic of rules).

Spend more hours promoting the heck out of it to get traffic.

Then sit back and see how good it turns out. Hopefully, you'll be blessed with a site that runs nicely with few problems, and nobody will use your site that you made with your blood, sweat, and tears to tell you that they could do it better.

I have stumbled across such sites that do not moderate their boards.

Few things offend me (unless directed AT me), but I can say that wading through countless posts of slams, foul language, advocation of illegal/immoral/harmful practices, etc. is not the way that I want to spend my time searching for information.

I am so grateful for ifish, its rules, its maker and its moderators. It keeps this a nice place to visit and one that I can share with the entire family.

Thanks for welcoming us into your home, Jennie!

I joined this board because it does have a responsible owner, with responsible rules that responsible moderators enforce in a reasonable and responsible manner.

Life is about making good decisions, taking responsibility for your actions and words and learning from your mistakes.

Thank you Jen and the mods for keeping this a respectful board where many ideas are discussed and shared with the many members and lurkers.

My loving wife just reminded me of my responsibilites. I have to get off the computer and go to work. Have a great day! SD
