Default Oil for 5.7 Marine Power / N/R Commander

Can anyone help confirm what type of oil N/R service department was using in the 5.7 Marine Power Vortec motor. I think from memory it was Valvolene, I do know it was synthetic though? Weight I have not a clue?? My guess would 10-40... If anyone has a quart available and can confirm what oil it was it would be greatly appreciated. I hate to swap oils since it has always had the same brand...

Last question, without going to storage and looking anyone know what gas/water filter it takes. Saves me a trip to storage.

Thanks,

Jim

My manual says SAE 30 weight for summer and SAE 40 weight in the winter. I use castol and Fram PH5 filters and have about 600 hours with no problems. My Commander is a 2002, probably older than yours though. I don't know the fuel/water filter off hand.

Cool Re: Oil for 5.7 Marine Power / N/R Commander

In my 5.7 Marine Power I use Mercruiser 25-40 Wt . oil ...
I know it says in the manual to use 30wt or 40wt ...
But I have been using this oil for many years with great results ...
And combine this with a Mercruiser oil filter #35-866340K01 ...
Its a short filter as thats all the room I have for installation ...
My fuel/ water filter is a Mercury 35-802893Q but a Sierra 18-7844 will work also ...
Hmmm I see a pattern here ...

Here is a quote form the owners manual.
"MP does not recommend the use of multi-viscosity, non detergent type oils. Oils that contain solid additives or low quality oils(other than 20w-40 or 20w-50) are also not recommended."
I called MP to clarify the statement above, and they like straight 30 or 40 weight, but 20-40 or 20-50 is OK.
They don't like synthetic oil and suggested that I if I used synthetic oil, I may have problems with the warranty if leaks occurred.
I have two oil filters and once my supply of MP filters is gone, MP suggested NAPA #21515 filters.
As far as the fuel/water filter is concerned it depends upon the type of system you have.
MP uses two types, which are totally different. One uses a spin on filter and the other is called a G-force, which uses a snap on type filter.
You didn't state which system you have.

Don't have a NR but in my 5.7 Marine Power I use Valvoline racing oil (40 wt) with Nappa gold filters for oil and water separator filters changed every year for 6 years with no problems! Nappa used to carry the oil but this year found it at Millers auto parts in Clackamas on hwy 212 .

Thanks Guys!

I dug through the boat files today and found my last reciept which reads... QT VR1 40W Racing oil----------- QTY-7, with Oilf filter being #51060 NAP (Must be NAPA).

I will google and see if the Valvoline VR1 is synthetic.. I am hoping not.

Tight lines,

Jim
