Default Home Remedies

Does anybody have any proven home cold remedies? Something other than a shot of whiskey and honey and wait 7 to 10 days?
I have a house full of cold victims...

How about desitin in a babies hair? Any of you know how to get it out? 6 shampoos later and she still looks like a grease ball.

Thanx,
SN

I've become a believer in massive doses of Vitamin C, but you have to start powering it down at the first sign of symptoms. Echinecea and zinc are other popular treatments.

Talk to your pediatrician before applying any of those to your kids.

You generally just have to treat the symptoms as they come. Hot tea and honey for sore throats, steam for congestion, the whiskey thing definitely works

Oh the Desitin, I think that's supposed to go on the other end ?? It won't last forever, don't worry... a shot of whiskey maybe (for you!)

For colds, boil a cutup chicken for about three hours in salted water. Boil until the water is creamy white. Use the broth as the base, get all the meat off the bone and make some soup. You know you got it right when the soup turns to jelly in the fridge. It works much better than soup out of a can. TRUST ME.

Try some dish soap followed by conditioner for the Desitin.

Zicam Homeopathic cold remedy. I haven't had a full blown cold in two years. Can be used on ages three and up. Burns a little in the nose, but works.
A LITTLE bit of dish soap. And as others have kindly pointed out, the desitin goes on the other end.

Cold Eze lozenges work great. Get them at any drug store. They have zinc and echinecea in them.

Work for me!

I agree with lost-sailor

Ecanacia is best suited at the first indication of a cold, vitamin C and zinc lozenges make a big difference, but I would also add that I have used ginseng for years, not the supliments in pill form, but the root itself.
You can find many sources for quality Ginseng root products in mags such as Fur-fish and game etc. or do a google search, theres a million kinds out there, email me for further info on the ups and downs.

Ginseng tea, with a sprig of fresh thyme is amazing stuff for a cold, and much more.

Ive also recently started using "rieshi" mushrooms. Believe it or not, this herb is as highly regarded in Asian medicine as the ginseng root. And it works when used on a regular regimen. Both ginseng and rieshi taken in moderation on a regular basis have many medicinal qualities and are quite non-interactive with most medications.

Hate to overwhelm you with stuff, but a pennyroyal bath is also a big help for colds, and a slough of other ailments from sore muscles, to atheletes foot and other fungi.

Aloe vera juice is likely the foulest thing I have ever tasted, but its effects are very beneficial too, available at safeway, its about $10 a gallon, but is well worth it. mix 3 or 4 ounces with a sweet fruit juice.

As was said, kids have different tollerances and I would talk to a doctor before treating any child with herbal remedies.
Of course theres not many doctors out there who highly recommend herbal cures and tonics over conventional medicine, I think you'll see the benefits in a moderated application will surprise you with these things.

As far as the desitin...it goes on the other end!

Carefully try a dab of noxema in dry hair massage it in and then wash well with shampoo

Ok, thanx for all the cold remedies info. Now I just have to build up enough energy to get up and go to the store.

As for the desitin, this isn't how it's applied?

When I went in to get her up the other morning, she looked like this - and was pointing to her head saying "hat hat"...

Two washings with dish soap worked pretty good. One more today and we should be ok.

Thanx for all the advice.

Been there, Sea Nymph. When my son was younger (as opposed to when he was older, I know) he got a hold of some of my wife's spendier hand cream while naked. He was a tough little devil to catch there for awhile.

No, no, the zinc (Desitin is Zinc Oxide) belongs INSIDE to fight a cold! But seriously, I'm not recommending you feed your daughter Desitin.

Sounds like you have your hands full.

For future reference, Simple Green is a fabulous grease cutter and purportedly non-toxic (but rinse thoroughly!)

That's one cute kid. Priceless picture for the ol' scrapbook.

Head and Shoulders for oily hair. Works pretty good but be careful about the eyes..
